magnitude concept from the Astronomy knowledge base
On a clear, dark night, the unaided eye can see stars as faint as apparent magnitude +6, and the largest telescopes penetrate to apparent magnitude +30., Measure of the observed brightness of a celestial object as seen from the Earth.
Absolute magnitude is defined as the apparent magnitude the star or galaxy would have if it were 32.6 light-years (10 parsecs) from Earth.
A measure of the radiation at all wavelengths emitted by a star is known as the bolometric magnitude.

 Wind Effects
The basic approach is to do a vector addition of the wind speed and the Derby speed to obtain an apparent wind speed and direction (see figure 1, and then calculate the drag force produced by this apparent wind acting on the projected area of the car exposed to the apparent wind.
As the apparent wind vector shifts from directly head-on, the large lateral area becomes exposed to the apparent wind, like a sail, thereby increasing the drag force.
The apparent velocity of the wind relative to the Derby (w) is the vector sum of the actual wind velocity (v) and the velocity of the ground relative to the racer under windless conditions (u):

After the integrations are completed, the apparent magnitude of the object under study is displayed in the message box.
By overlaying and aligning these main sequence stars on top of your apparent magnitude H-R diagram, you will be able to relate the apparent magnitude (m) of a cluster star to an absolute magnitude (M) from the main sequence plot.
The color index, B-V, is the apparent blue magnitude (B) minus the apparent visual magnitude (V).

 Apparent magnitude - Encyclopedia.WorldSearch
The apparent magnitude (m) of a star, planet or other heavenly body is a measure of its apparent brightness; that is, the amount of light received from the object.
The absolute magnitude, M, of a star or galaxy is the apparent magnitude it would have if it were 10 parsecs away; that of a planet (or other solar system body) is the apparent magnitude it would have if it were 1 astronomical unit away from both the Sun and Earth.
The rate at which apparent brightness changes, as the distance from an object increases, is calculated by the inverse-square law (at cosmological distance scales, this is no longer quite true because of the curvature of space).

The moment the Sun is exactly on the Midheaven of any place is apparent noon at that place; hence an apparent solar day is the interval between two consecutive passages of the Sun across the Midheaven, or the elapsed time from one apparent noon to the next.
To make possible the use of time-keeping mechanisms, there was adopted a standard fixed day of 24 hours, known as a mean day - the length of which is the average of all the apparent days of the year.
If the Figure were to be erected for apparent time, the birth moment would have to be corrected to apparent time, and the result would be the same.

Solar time - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Mean solar time is artificial clock time adjusted via observations of the diurnal rotation of the fixed stars to agree with average apparent solar time.
Apparent solar time is based on the apparent solar day, which is the interval between two successive returns of the Sun to the local meridian.
Before the mid first millennium BC they were only adjusted to agree with the apparent solar day, thus were no better than the shadow cast by a gnomon (a vertical pole), except that they could be used at night.

Apparent - Much in the same way as impedance (Z) is the combination of reactance (X) and resistance (R) apparent power is the combination of pure power (P) with reactive power (VAR).
To this two powers, a third must be added, “apparent power.” Much in the same way as impedance (Z) is the combination of reactance (X) and resistance (R), apparent power is the combination of pure power with VAR.
Apparent power is measured in VAs (Volt-Amps) and it’s mathematical formula symbol is “S.” Transformers are rated in VAs.

 Notes from Under Sky
The Sun's daily apparent motion is therefore the sum of two separate and also apparent motions: the east-to-west motion caused by the Earth's rotation, and the much slower west-to-east motion caused by its orbital motion around the Sun.
That means that if the Sun's apparent motion due to orbital motion were to increase by 50 percent, it would be enough to counteract the apparent motion of the Sun due to Mercury's rotation, and the Sun would actually appear to stand still.
The variation in the Sun's apparent motion doesn't change very much as a result (about 6 percent, twice the variation in distance), and its effect is never so great as to ever be greater than the rotational motion (which, after all, is 366 times greater on average).

No. 99-841: Primeaux v. United States - Opposition
By contrast, "apparent authority" as petitioner attempts to apply it here concerns the employee's apparent identity as an agent for his employer when viewed by the plaintiff, without any knowledge of the employee's actions by the employer.
It is no less foreseeable that such an abuse of authority could occur while the officer is not technically on duty, but rather possesses the apparent authority sufficient to cause a person to rely on or fear that authority and succumb to sexual advances.
The court was equally correct in rejecting the argument that a State's respondeat superior law, including the law of apparent authority, could substitute for the statutory "scope of employment" requirement in 28 U.S.C. 1346(b)(1), which determines the extent of the United States' waiver of sovereign immunity.
