AMD64 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
AMD64 (also x86-64 or x64) is a 64-bit microprocessor architecture and corresponding instruction set designed by Advanced Micro Devices.
AMD64 CPUs are recognized by hacked versions of OS X "for Intel." A patch is needed to emulate SSE3 instructions on the earlier AMD64 chips that support only SSE2.
AMD64 represents a break with AMD's past behavior of following Intel's standards, but repeats Intel's earlier behavior of extending the x86 architecture, from the 16-bit 8086 to the 32-bit 80386 and beyond, without ever removing backwards compatibility.

EM64T - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Early AMD64 processors lacked the CMPXCHG16B instruction, which is an extension of the CMPXCHG8B instruction present on most post-486 processors.
Extended Memory 64-bit Technology (EM64T) is Intel's implementation of AMD64, a 64-bit extension to the IA-32 architecture.
The history of the EM64T project is long and convoluted, mainly due to the internal politics of Intel.

 AMD64 Solutions
AMD64 is the next step in the evolution of computing, extending the original PC architecture to a new level of computing performance and capability.
AMD64 processors like the AMD Opteron and AMD Athlon 64 processors are compatible with today’s hardware and software and smooth the transition to the next crucial step in the evolution of the personal computer, workstation, server, and supercomputing cluster.
AMD64 is designed to enable simultaneous 32- and 64-bit computing with no degradation in performance.

AMD64 is AMD’s 64-bit computing platform that extends x86 and defines a new class of computing.
AMD64 Technology enables the industry to advance software development on all fronts, with x86 compatibility, while providing the capability of delivering 64-bit technology benefits.
The AMD64 computing platform allows the latest in processor innovation to work smoothly with the existing installed base of 32-bit applications and operating systems, and builds momentum towards an increasing installed base of native 64-bit environments.

AMD64 technology is also designed to enhance the security of computing environments by integrating Enhanced Virus Protection(a) technology enabled by advanced anti-virus features in current versions of Linux, Microsoft(R) Windows(R) and Solaris operating systems.
Since their 2003 introduction, AMD64 processors have earned more than 120 industry awards and the support of more than 2,000 OEMs, hardware and software developers, system builders and distributors.
The AMD64 processor platform is the gold standard for 64-bit computing.

 LWN: Debian on AMD64
This is mainly in anticipation of increased popularity of the 64-bit processors in the future and to gain experience in solving challenges that exist while developing a distribution that would be not only considerably faster than its x86 counterpart, but also equally usable - both on servers and workstations.
That said, Debian developers have been working on an AMD64 for some time, and unofficial builds, including Sarge installation CDs and documentation, are already available on the Debian AMD64 Port pages.
Although still labeled as beta, Debian's AMD64 port has so far proved to be a trouble-free, high-quality distribution that is certainly ready for deployment on high-end developer workstations.

Microsoft Windows for AMD64 is just a first step
In order to use the market to put substantial pressure on Intel, AMD is going to have to demonstrate a compelling reason why x86-64 and not IA64 (or plain ol' 32-bit) is the future of computing.
There's a 64-bit version of Unreal Tournament 2003 but no word yet on whether it'll be officially released, and so far as I've heard there's no mention at all of 64-bit optimized versions of Doom 3 and Half-Life.
The only company that could drive the x86-64 initiative to a state where CPUs supporting the code would be completely standard (just as 32-bit CPUs are standard today) is Intel.

Many other areas could benefit from such AMD64 optimizations: data compression algorithms, checksumming algorithms, video encoding, etc. Unfortunately AMD64 is so young that it will take some time (1, 2, 4 years ?) before all the real-world applications run at full-speed on this evolutionary architecture.
I hope this shows you what is possible when code is optimized for the AMD64 architecture.
Generally speaking, most CPU-hungry i386 applications are already very well optimized, while much of the work remains to be done for AMD64.

Although the 64-bit x86 architectures from AMD and Intel are almost identical, in some cases programs written for one chipset may not run properly on the other, according to a report issued Monday by a research firm.
In-Stat's examination of the Intel and AMD 64-bit instruction sets found nothing to contradict Intel's claim that its 64-bit x86 processors will run 64-bit operating systems developed for AMD64, added Halfhill, but that minor differences do exist.
In-Stat's "Microprocessor Report" analyzed the instructions, memory-addressing schemes, and other features of the two architectures, and found in almost every case that Intel had patterned its after AMD64.

Tom Halfhill, an analyst at In-Stat/MDR in San Jose, said Monday that he had compared the instruction sets of AMD's 64-bit chips, called AMD64, with the 64-bit extensions to be used in the Intel Xeon processor and future desktop chips.
After investigating the instruction sets used by 64-bit chips from AMD and Intel, an industry analyst has concluded that Intel reverse-engineered the AMD64 instruction set to create its own 64-bit microprocessor architecture.
The two instructions are somewhat innocuous; the LAHF and SAHF instructions load and store status flags into a particular address.
