Acronym and initialism - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
When an acronym is part of a function in computing that is conventionally written in lowercase, it is common to use an apostrophe to pluralize or otherwise conjugate the token.
In computer lingo, it is common to use the name of a computer program, format, or function, acronym or not, as a verb; for example "Sam zipped the files" or "Sam zip’ed the files" means that John used the program zip on the files to combine and/or compress them.
Initialisms may have advantages in international markets: for example, some national affiliates of International Business Machines are legally incorporated as "IBM" (or, for example, "IBM Canada") to avoid translating the full name into local languages.

Since the object of using these abbreviated forms is to make copy easier to read and less cluttered, resist using an acronym or initialism for every phrase that has one.
However, because acronyms and initialisms can have multiple meanings (like IDE and SST), it's a good idea to define each the first time it occurs in a document.
For some acronyms and initialisms, not every word in the phrase is represented:

An example of an acronym that probably won't become lower-cased is WINS (Windows Internet Naming Service).
An abbreviation formed of letters that don't form a word is sometimes known as an "initialism." Our Webster's cites "snafu" and "radar" as examples of acronyms.
We don't think anyone has looked at this issue squarely (and we're not planning to ourselves, but just wanted to demonstrate the ambiguous kind of world we live in...which is why most people frankly don't care whether an acronym is a word or not).
