Topic: Advanced Packaging Tool

Advanced Packaging Tool - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Advanced Packaging Tool, or APT, is a package management system used by Debian and its derivatives.
APT simplifies the process of installing and removing software on Unix systems, by automating the retrieval, (from the Internet, local network, or CD) the configuration, the compiling (sometimes) and the installation of software from APT sources.
APT pinning is a way for administrators to make Debian GNU/Linux's version of APT to grab particular packages from different distributions, using it with more than two of the Debian release sources: stable, testing, and unstable.

Package uploads are automatically processed to ensure that the upload is well-formed (all the requisite files are in place) and that the package bears the digital signature -- produced with OpenPGP-compatible software -- of a Debian developer.
A software package is a special method for the distribution and installation of software on computer systems.
Normally, software packages uploaded to unstable are versions released by the original upstream developer that are themselves stable, but with packaging and other Debian-specific modifications introduced by Debian developers that may be new and untested.

Linux.com What to do when apt-get fails
A package may need programs that are not available from the repositories in /etc/apt/sources.list, or a newer version of a program.
If you open the control file in the package's control.tar.gz archive, you may be able to change the package dependencies, then regain a working system by installing the package then automatically removing it.
The main drawback the approach is that it requires knowledge of how Debian packages are built, or at least a detailed set of instructions prepared ahead of time.
