Topic: Airstream Wireless

 Microsoft's Mobile Information Server
The idea behind Airstream is that Microsoft doesn't want to be late to the wireless data game.
I've mentioned Airstream briefly before, but now that Microsoft has gone formally public with this technology, let's look at what the product is and why it matters to our Exchange deployments.

 Airstream Wireless Internet
This means our system is plug and play, virtually any Ethernet environment can be integrated on to AirStream Communication’s network.
Breezecom is an Israeli company, (originally named Lanair), which designed these systems for use in real time military telemetry and computer communications.

 CNN.com - Technology - Microsoft gears up for wireless Web - August 10, 2000
The new software includes client-side products for smart phones and handheld computers as well as server software that can be used to build and deploy wireless services.
For example, AT&T will soon announce an add-on card for Compaq Computer's iPaq handheld computer that will connect users with AT&T's CDPD (cellular digital packet data) wireless network.
The Stinger prototype was shown here Tuesday to give users and handset makers a taste of the kind of features they can expect, the software vendor said.

Wireless PCs are only dependant on having access to power, so furniture rearranging or changing rooms no longer has to consider the position of a data socket.
All Wireless Routers and WAPs have a default SSID (and it isn't hard to find out what they are, even with a quick Google) so it's generally recommended that you at least change the SSID to something else.
If you have a 54mbs Wireless Router or WAP already, there's not a lot of point in spending the extra dollars on 108mbs capable adapters unless you intend to upgrade the Router or WAP eventually too (and vice versa).

New Wireless EKG System Monitors Cardiac Patients
The system's second component is a web based information center where doctors can store all the patient data and traces, annotate and markup incoming patient data in real time, and manage a variety of alert possibilities.
According to CEO Jason Braverman, Airstream is currently working on Phase Two of the development which will introduce new features into the system, including a 14 day memory capacity for the portable ECG unit, allowing up to 14 days of uninterrupted traces to be recorded.
HeartScan is made up of a hardware/software component worn by the patient much like current holter monitor systems.

Airstream Push Has Yet to Fly
Microsoft officials defend the Airstream middleware platform—now known as Mobile Information 2001 Server, or MIS—saying the beta version has shipped as promised and Version 1.0 will be commercially available in May.
But now, a rift between the two appears to be developing.
Wireless Knowledge officials say their products support far more applications and devices than Microsoft's.

Palm Boulevard: News: Palm and Microsoft Get Set for Wireless War
Palm Inc. has long had a stronghold on the PDA market, and the result is that software develpers have generally chosen to focus their efforts on developing software for the PalmOS instead of Microsoft's Windows CE.
Will Microsoft surge ahead with its emphasis on doing more with one machine?
Among the developments in the works are e-wallet and location based services.

One of the company's historical strengths has been Windows, the dominant end-user interface and the operating system people use to access and create digital information.
Mobile Information Server - code-named Airstream - is Microsoft's attempt to provide the link between data that resides on wired networks (such as e-mail on a Microsoft Exchange server sitting in a company's headquarters) and the end user's wireless devices.

If you use the 802.11g standard, (54mb) the signals are stronger and can more easily get to the 250' being inside your Airstream.
Does anyone have any suggestions as to the best way to hookup for internet services while travelling.
If you go straight 802.11 you'll be far less than 250' in the Airstream.
