Development stage - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Each major version of a product usually goes through a stage when new features are added (alpha stage), then a stage when it is actively debugged (beta stage), and finally a stage when all important bugs have been removed (stable stage).
The name is derived from Alpha, the first letter in the Greek alphabet.
A beta version or beta release usually represents the first feature complete version of a computer program or other product, likely to be unstable but useful for internal demonstrations and previews to select customers.

Alpha - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The uppercase letter alpha is not generally used as a symbol because it tends to be rendered identically to the uppercase latin A.
Alpha is represented in Unicode by U+0391 (uppercase alpha) and U+03B1 (lowercase alpha).
Alpha, both as a symbol and term, is used to refer to or describe a variety of things, including the first or most significant occurrence of something.

 Interloping Scripts
The real justification for their disjunction, where other letters have been borrowed into the IPA from Greek, is that they are not limited to phonetic usage; they have been adopted in the widely used, and largely IPA-based, Practical Orthography of African languages.
The mathematical typesetting of Greek letters in an overall Latin context has developed its own tradition, which Haralambous (§2) spends a little time discussing; it includes the obligatory italicising of Greek, and the preference for closed phi and theta, and distinctive glyphs for alpha and gamma.
I've already addressed the havoc mathematics has wrought on the Greek script in Unicode in discussing mathematical symbol letters, as well as the mathematical alphanumeric symbols.

 ENIF
Though given only the fifth letter of the Greek alphabet by Bayer, Enif, at mid second magnitude (2.39), is still the brightest star in the constellation Pegasus.
Modern constellation boundaries, however, place Alpheratz formally in Andromeda, where it is better known as Alpha Andromedae, leaving the field clear for Enif to triumph.
It just beats out Markab (Alpha) and Scheat (Beta), both in the Great Square, which received Alpha through Delta, showing the Square's importance.

The numeration requires that this letter have the value 6.
The number value of this triplet of letters, obtained either by direct addition or through the addition of the numbers of the names of the letters spelled in full is so remote from the value in the text that the entry can only be considered incomplete.

 Stargazing In Big Sky Country
It assigns a Greek letter to each star based on decreasing visual brightness with the brightest receiving “Alpha”, second brightest “Beta”, third “Gamma”, and so on to number 24, “Omega”.
Unfortunately, the “Bayer System” is flawed – occasionally, the “Alpha star” is not the brightest star in the constellation, as in the case of Orion, where Rigel (Beta Orionis) is actually brighter than Betelgeuse (Alpha Ori).
The Greek Letter is then followed either by the “genitive” form of the constellation in which it is found or its abbreviated form.

The Bayer designation consists of two parts: a Greek letter, such as Alpha, to designate the particular star in a constellation and usually in descending order of brightness; and the name of the constellation in the Latin genitive (possessive) case, such as Ursae Minoris and meaning "of Ursa Minor".
Each star in a constellation was assigned a Greek letter, usually starting with the brightest (alpha), and the name of the constellation was appended.
For example, one of the four stars of the Great Square of Pegasus became part of the constellation Andromeda and is now known as Alpha Andromedae.

However, there are numerous examples which have been found where his designations are clearly out of order (resulting in some astronomers even accusing him of having faulty vision!), where the Greek letters weren't properly assigned, such as cases where the star assigned the letter alpha is clearly not the brightest.
For example, the brightest star of the constellation Canis Minor became Alpha Canis Minoris, the 2nd-brightest Beta Canis Minoris, and so on.
A few examples of these designations are Alpha Centauri, Gamma Crucis, Nu Draconis, Epsilon Hydrae and Delta Ursae Majoris.

The first designation, using the Greek letter alpha, is called the Bayer designation and represents its primary placement (not always its brightness) in the constellation of Canis Major.
An example is the name Betelgeuse for alpha Orionis, which Allen attributes to a supposed Arabic form, bat al-jauza, which he claims means "armpit of the giant." In fact, such a form would be ungrammatical; the proper form of bat should be ibt.
For instance, the brightest star in the night sky, Sirius, is also known as alpha Canis Majoris and 9 Canis Majoris.

It has the honor of having (along with Shedar, Alpha Cassiopeiae) the most accurately-measured angular diameter, 0.00680 seconds of arc (a penny 60 kilometers away), from which we find another value for true diameter of 14.7 solar, beautifully in accord with that found from temperature and luminosity.
Around the time of Homer, the equinox was situated only nine degrees south of Hamal, allowing us to personalize the time that has passed since the Iliad and Odyssey were written.
