Analog hole - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The analog hole (sometimes analog reconversion problem or analog reconversion issue) is a fundamental vulnerability in copy prevention schemes for noninteractive digital content which is intended to be played back using analog means.
Although the technical possibility of making digital recordings from analog outputs has existed for some time, it was not necessarily viewed as a "hole" before widespread deployments of DRM in the late 1990s.
When the information is converted to a perceptible analog form, there are no restrictions on the resulting analog signal, and the content can be captured back into digital form with no restrictions.

If you think analog is only good for supporting legacy devices, then your view of the "analog hole problem" is likely to be very different from someone who thinks of analog outputs as an innovation opportunity.
In their view, since all digital outputs will be hobbled by "content protection" technology, we must plug the "analog hole" to somehow make sure that the analog output stays at least as hobbled as the digital.
The work of the ARDG is to develop a fix for the "analog hole" -- the fact that anything that emerges from an analog output can easily be redigitized.

In an effort to solve this "analog hole" or "analog reconversion" problem, the studios have convened a group called the Analog Reconversion Discussion Group (ARDG), which recently solicited proposals from a number of companies for a solution.
In the name of "parity" or "equality" between analog and digital video signals, they have proposed to eliminate, by law, much of the flexibility that the public currently enjoys in its use of analog video.
For many purposes, analog video is preferable to digital because it avoids technological restrictions on use and copying.

The attempt to try and fast-track this through an agency process, while it hasn’t wholly silenced consumers, has diminished their voices in a manner that’s ultimately going to affect the way that they enjoy TV and their consumer electronics devices, and even the ways they use their computers," Godwin said.

The analog hole has been defined by Richard Parsons, CEO of AOL Time Warner at the Senate Judiciary Hearing of March 14th, 2002 as: “Video content, even when delivered digitally in a protected manner, must be converted to an unprotected analog format to be viewed on the millions of analog television sets in consumer homes.
Technology to address the “analog hole” exists and can be applied to provide the protection necessary to prevent unauthorized redistribution of broadcast content and help ensure consumers can benefit from new content, distributed in new ways, using the new technologies that are becoming increasingly widespread.
Technologies have been identified to help secure the analog hole and the digital domain, as noted in the following recent quotes from leaders in the technology, motion picture, and government sectors: “Watermarks may provide a means to ensure that protection rules survive as content transitions analog outputs.” Dr.
