Apple watchers are excited by the prospect that Apple could use the cross-platform Darwin to build future versions of the MacOS capable of running on cheap Intel-based machines instead of pricey Apple hardware.
"Apple has been trying for years to do a MacOS version for Windows, but the old MacOS code was too difficult to port over," said Jeff Carr, president of LinuxPPC, which is developing a variant of Linux for the Mac.
In addition, all of Apple's software developers would have to rewrite their applications to run on a MacOS X/Intel machine.

Technology News: Developer : Apple Posts Darwin Source Code, Pulls OS X Update
Apple said its primary focus for Darwin is the formation of a community of users and developers with source-code releases intended to support Mac OS X. Still, the company expects others will use Darwin to customize OS X with additional services and features that are not necessarily a priority for Apple.
Among the most prominent of open-source projects from Apple, Darwin is based on FreeBSD 4.4 and is the core of the Mac OS X operating system.
Apple also said it expects Darwin -- which cannot run higher-level OS X software, such as Cocoa and Carbon toolkits -- to eventually become the foundation for a complete, stand-alone open-source operating system.

Darwin is not free software, because the APSL is not consistent with the free software definition.

The GNU Darwin folks (and a lot the GNU folks) need to learn a little less from Stallman (follow your narrow principles singlemindedly wherever they lead) and a little more from Torvalds (be pragmatic and realistic about your circumstances to advance toward your goals).

I have a high degree of confidence that most of the user-space software will work without problems, particularly since a majority of it comes from the BSD world where Intel is the primary platform, but also because we've seen it work before in Rhapsody.
