Apple Macintosh - encyclopedia article about Apple Macintosh.
Apple has introduced a number of innovations in direct relation to the Macintosh 128k that were later adopted by the rest of industry as a standard for the design of computers.
Apple has also contributed heavily to the field of mobile computing, and many features of their mobile computers have become the norm.
Apple struggled to encourage software developers to port software titles to the Macintosh, however Bill Gates at Microsoft realized that the GUI would become an industry-standard, and that his software would sell in large quantity if it was available for the Macintosh.

Meanwhile various groups within Apple were working on a completely new kind of personal computer, with advanced technologies such as a graphical user interface, computer mouse, object-oriented programming and networking capabilities.
Apple is known for innovative software and hardware, such as the iMac; its iPod digital music player; and the iTunes Music Store.
Apple has been criticised for their vertically integrated business model, which runs against the grain of much of the 'received wisdom' of economists, particularly for the computer industry.

Apple III - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Apple III was designed to be a business computer.
The Apple III's software library was very limited, and whilst sold as an Apple II compatible, the emulation that made this possible was intentionally hobbled, thus it could not make use of the advanced III features (specifically 64K RAM or higher, required by a large number of Apple II software titles) which limited its usefulness.
The III Plus fixed the hardware problems of the original III, included 256K of memory, built-in clock, video interlacing, and featured a keyboard in the style of the Apple IIe.

It is also the first Apple computer to have a built-in floppy drive, a Shugart 143k 5.25-inch floppy drive.
But Apple didn't expect the Apple II to continue to be so successsful, so they set out to design an even better system, the Apple III, specifically for the business environment.
On the Plus, the keyboard is now a lighter shade than on the original Apple III, and the matching monitor is also in a lighter shade to match the keyboard.

History of computer design: Apple III
This illustrates the then unique importance placed by Apple on the physical appearance of its machines; Apple valued case design enough to contradict the practice of the hobby market from which it had emerged by subordinating the elegance of electronics to that of its enclosure.
At the same time, the Apple II remained the most popular hobby computer because of its open architecture - "an entire subindustry" emerged to add functionality to the Apple II via its many expansion ports (Moore, 68).
Late changes made by another Apple designer, Bill Dresselhaus, would be superficial, so that the design of the electronics was shaped by an existing form.
