Newton was, in fact, intended to be a complete reinvention of personal computing.
The final evolution of the Newton's handwriting recognition system is still considered by many to be very impressive, only matched by the more modern Tablet PC handwriting recognition system.
Apple's utility to perform this task, the Newton Connection Utility, was exceedingly complex and was never completed to perform to the satisfaction of most users.

The Apple executives said they have been mulling over the option of licensing the technology, but no deals are on the table right now.
Ditching a product widely viewed as one of the most sophisticated - and pricey - in the fast-growing and competitive mobile-computing market, Apple Computer announced today it will cease development of its Newton operating system and related hardware - including the MessagePad 2100 and the more affordable eMate 300, which is designed for students.
In keeping with such thinking, Apple insisted it will stay in the mobile computing market - but with products based on the Macintosh operating system.

Together with a different team of engineers I have helped integrate handwriting recognition into Mac OS X in such a way that it just works with all existing apps; i.e., applications are not required to rev in order to support ink and the routine input of text by a pen and graphics tablet.
Unlike the first generation software, this second generation recognition engine was developed in-house at Apple, in the Advanced Technology Group (ATG), later (and briefly) renamed the Apple Research Laboratories (ARL).
The core recognition technology from the Newton has gained a new lease on life in the Jaguar release of Mac OS X (10.2).

I believe, that there will only be a new PDA form Apple, if the engeniers in Cuppertino figure out a new way to input data.
