Topic: Association for Computing Machinery

A Computational Foundation for the Study of Cognition
A careful analysis of computation and its relation to cognition suggests that the ambitions of artificial intelligence and the centrality of computation in cognitive science are justified.
Artificial intelligence and computational cognitive science are committed to a kind of computationalism about the mind, a computationalism defined by the theses of computational sufficiency and computational explanation.
Both proponents and opponents of a computational approach have often implicitly identified computation with symbolic computation.

 Encyclopedia4U - Computing - Encyclopedia Article
Originally the word computing was synonymous with counting and calculating, and a computer was a person who computes.
Since the advent of the electronic computer, it has come to also mean the operation and usage of these machines, as well as the electrical processes carried out within the computer hardware itself.

NodeWorks - Encyclopedia: Association for Computing Machinery
The Association for Computing Machinery, or ACM, was founded in 1947 as the world's first scientific and educational computing society.
ACM's primary competitor is the IEEE Computer Society.
Another blunt way to state the difference is that ACM is for computer science majors and IEEE is for electrical engineering majors.

Behind Artificial Intelligence, a Squadron of Bright Real People - New York Times
At its low point, some computer scientists and software engineers avoided the term artificial intelligence for fear of being viewed as wild-eyed dreamers.
This leap was possible, in large part, because researchers are moving from an approach that relied principally on logic and rule-based systems to more probability or statistics-oriented software technologies.
By the late 1970's, the robotic vehicle was capable of moving about two feet at a time in one-second spurts, pausing for half a minute to compute between attempting the next movement.
