 BBC Basic
BBC Basic could be acquired in the 1980s by buying a BBC Computer, which initially cost almost four hundred pounds sterling.
What's really good about BBC Basic is that it is possible to learn to program computers without having to be a techno fundamentally.
If you know nothing of computer programming you can learn on the BBC Basic language interpreter, with a BBC Computer manual and by having a go.

BASIC programming language - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
BASIC was designed to allow students to write programs using time-sharing computer terminals.
BASIC was intended to address the complexity issues of older languages with a new language designed specifically for the new class of users the time-sharing systems allowed — that is, a "simpler" user who was not as interested in speed as in simply being able to use the machine.
BASIC is a family of high-level programming languages.

Encyclopedia article on BBC BASIC [EncycloZine]
BBC BASIC was developed in 1981 as a native programming language for the MOS Technology 6502 based Acorn BBC Micro home/personal computer, mainly by Roger Wilson.
It was a version of the BASIC programming language adapted for a U.K. computer literacy project of the BBC.
A Zilog Z80 -version of BBC BASIC was later used on the Tiki 100 desktop computer, Cambridge Z88 portable, and Amstrad's NC100 Notepad and NC200 Notebook computers.

The BBC B Micro computer was the first home computer I purchased in 1994.
The BBC computer comes with its own built-in BASIC programming language.
During my working life in the aerospace and machine tool industries, I had much experience in using professional computers of many types, using many different programming languages.

 BBC - h2g2 - BASIC Programming Language
Several people point to BASIC as the gateway language, the first real language to bring computer programming out of the hands of mathematicians, making Computer Science as a seperate discipline possible.
BASIC still Exists today in Microsofts QBASIC and a few other products, and also as Visual BASIC, a Object Oriented language developed by Micrsoft, though it is less popular than many of the other OOP langauges.
The User, typically a student at a university or a researcher trying to solve a problem in the real world, would have to punch their programs onto cards, up to 70,000 different cards for some complex programs, and every card had to be in exact order or the machine would generate errors.

 R.T.Russell: BBC BASIC for Windows
BBC BASIC for Windows is thought to be free from serious bugs, and it is highly unlikely that it could do any harm to other software or systems.
BBC BASIC for Windows versions 3.00a and later are not 100% compatible with earlier versions.
Programs can access the string descriptor via assembly language or by means of indirection.

Getting Started : BBC BASIC for Windows : Stryker Software
BBC BASIC started life on the Acorn 8-Bit computers and continues to this day as an integral part of the RISC OS operating system.
Richard Russell deserves a lot of praise for not just only porting this superb language to the Windows operating system but for continuing to create new and superb examples of what can be done using the language.
If you already write software for Windows in another language you may already have some Windows API documentation included with another programming language.

 R. T. Russell: BBC BASIC History
BBC BASIC was conceived sometime in 1980, when the BBC first had the idea of educating the public in the use of computers.
Although BBC BASIC (86) isn't fully integrated into the Windows environment, it will work perfectly well in a window and it is even possible to write BASIC programs that are controlled by the mouse.
Acorn already had a home computer on the market at that time, the Atom, but the language resident in that machine was a very quirky version of BASIC which, although fast, had poor compatibility with the versions in other machines.

Although not a full emulator, it is certainly worth noting, even though it costs 149 pounds!
