BBC Micro - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The BBC Micro, affectionately known as the Beeb, was an early home computer.
The BBC wanted to base its project on a microcomputer capable of performing various tasks which they could then demonstrate in their TV series The Computer Programme (1981).
The success of the machine in the UK was largely due to its acceptance as an "educational" computer – the vast majority of UK schools used BBC Micros to teach computer literacy and information technology skills.

When the BBC Micro models A and B were first released, it was possible to add a disk upgrade to the machine, Mind you, the upgrade cost about £120, so it wasn't a popular upgrade initially - until people got hacked off with a large program taking 20 minutes to load from cassette tape.
In Acorn's design of the BBC Micro, the floppy disk controller appears in the memory map from andFE80 - andFE9F - however only 3 address lines are made available to the floppy disk controller, and so only 8 locations are uniquely addressable (e.g.

Most of my friends had either Commodore 64s or Spectrums, but while the Commodore 64 had better graphics and sound, it was really just a games machine (the Spectrum was also just a games machine - a very popular one at that, which was strange as it was a steaming-turd of a computer).
The BBC was capable of so much more, and a lot of the games had something appealing about them; the programmers seemed more willing to try something new rather than just copy the latest arcade games.
Commissioned by the BBC and built by Acorn Computers, the humble BBC Micro came out in 1981 and, thanks to government funding, soon ended up in virtually every school in the UK during the first half of the 80's.
