Topic: BSD

Berkeley Software Distribution - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
BSD pioneered many of the advances of modern computing.
DragonFly BSD is the newest of the BSDs, focusing on using a better SMP system than FreeBSD and making the kernel capable of natively supporting SSI clustering for high performance computing, although the project is still a few years away from achieving this goal and currently focused on the i386 platform.
Net/2 was the basis for two separate ports of BSD to the Intel 80386 architecture: the free 386BSD by William Jolitz and the proprietary BSD/OS by Berkeley Software Design (BSDi).

 BSD: Linux With a Twist
BSD is a full-fledged Unix operating system, which shares Linux' technical prowess and open-source development drive, and with an an unbroken line of descent back to ATandT UNIX version 1 to show as prime pedigree.
Eventually BSD was freed from the shackles of the ATandT UNIX source code license requirement as all the ATandT-copyrighted code was gradually replaced.
The BSD implementation was done by Kirk McKusick, the creator of FFS.

BSD license - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Some notable examples of this are the use of BSD networking code in Microsoft products, and the use of numerous FreeBSD components in Mac OS X.
This is problematic since with large numbers of people working on a single project (or for many separate projects in a software distribution), the advertising clause quickly created large and unwieldy acknowledgements.
Since then, authors of free and open source software have been free to incorporate BSD-licensed software with GPL-licensed works.

 Explaining BSD
BSD handles library version upgrades by providing compatibility modules for earlier library versions, so it is possible to run binaries which are several years old with no problems.
BSD developers tend to be more experienced than Linux developers, and have less interest in making the system easy to use.
The X Window system used in most versions of BSD is maintained by a separate project, the XFree86 project.

 4.4 BSD Lite-based Operating Systems
BSD 4.4-Lite provides both a log-structured file system and a memory-mapped file system, both of which can help enhance performance over the Linux offerings.
WindRiver BSD/OS is the commercial version of BSD.
the other major "family" of Unix-like operating systems is the somewhat fragmented family based on the 4.4 BSD "Lite" release from University of California.

Open Sources: Voices from the Open Source Revolution
While this reintegration caused a short-term delay in the development of the various BSD systems, it was a blessing in disguise since it forced all the divergent groups to resynchronize with the three years of development that had occurred at the CSRG since the release of Networking Release 2.
That was because the BSD systems were never released by Berkeley in a binary-only format; the distributions always contained the complete source to every part of the system.
The BSD release of Unix only held its dominant commercial position for a few years before returning to its roots.

 Definition of Dragonfly bsd
In computing, the DragonFly BSD operating system is a fork of FreeBSD.
The DragonFly developers are slowly moving toward using the "busdma" APIs, which will help to make the system easier to port to new architectures, but it is not a major focus at this time.
Matt Dillon, a long-time FreeBSD and Amiga developer, started work on DragonFly BSD in June 2003 and announced it on the FreeBSD mailing lists on 16 July 2003.

We recommend copyleft, because it protects freedom for all users, but non-copylefted software can still be free software, and useful to the free software community.

 Daemon News
From his first paper on the implementation of Berkeley Pascal in 1979, to his pioneering work in the eighties on the BSD Fast File System, the BSD virtual memory system, the final release from the UC Berkeley Computer Systems Research Group, 4.4 BSD Lite2, and his work after 4.4 BSD.
BSD Updates provides online security and operating system upgrades for BSD systems in binary format.
The symbolism in the old logo was unmistakable: A bunch of little daemon processes doing something significant on a hodgepodge of old, broken, and diverse hardware.

 The 4.4BSD Copyright
As you know, certain of the Berkeley Software Distribution ("BSD") source code files require that further distributions of products containing all or portions of the software, acknowledge within their advertising materials that such products contain software developed by UC Berkeley and its contributors.
Accordingly, the foregoing paragraph of those BSD Unix files containing it is hereby deleted in its entirety.
All advertising materials mentioning features or use of this software * must display the following acknowledgement: * This product includes software developed by the University of * California, Berkeley and its contributors."

 UNIX BSD information
First introduced in late 1977, as 1BSD, BSD is short for Berkeley Software Distribution was an idea / operating system developed at the Computer System Research Group (CSRG) at the University of California at Berkeley.
BSDi or BSD Inc. was founded in 1991 by some of the leading CSRG computer scientists.

 Beastie: The BSD Daemon
BSD (Berkeley Systems Distribution) began a set of patches to the AT&T UNIX operating system distributed by the University of California at Berkeley's Computer Science Research Group (CSRG).
There have been a variety of drawings of the daemon since it's creation, many of which can be found at Kirk McKusick's BSD Daemon History page.
Although the CSRG no longer exists, their work has continued through the efforts of a variety of open source and commercial BSD UNIX distributions:

Exploit world -- FreeBSD, OpenBSD, NetBSD, 386BSD, BSDI section
Any with sliplogin older than 2.1.0, mostly linux systems (many BSD distributions have the program, but it apparently can't be exploited to another error).
A quirk in Sendmail that could potentially be exploited is that usernames like '/etc/passwd' get written into the file of the same name when mail is received for them.
You can't read a file you shouldn't be able to, but by feeding bad args to open, you can get a valid file descriptor and do inappropriate ioctl's to it.

 Amazon.com: Books: BSD Hacks
In the world of Unix operating systems, the various BSDs come with a long heritage of high-quality software and well-designed solutions, making them a favorite OS of a wide range of users.
Among budget-minded users who adopted BSD early on to developers of some of today's largest Internet sites, the popularity of BSD systems continues to grow.
One of the quietly great things about the BSD family of UNIX Operating Systems, is the terrific documentation.

 The DragonFly BSD Project
The true innovation has given way to basically just laying on hacks to add features, such as encrypted disks and security layering that in a better environment could be developed at far less cost and with far greater flexibility.
These operating systems belong in the same class as Linux in that they are based on UNIX ideals and APIs.
It is our belief that the correct choice of features and algorithms can yield the potential for excellent scalability, robustness, and debuggability in a number of broad system categories.
