 Bayer designation - Wikipedia
In practice, there are numerous examples where the designations are out of order, and there are even cases where a star has a designation for a constellation in which it does not lie (according to the modern constellation boundaries).
In principle, the brightest star of the constellation should be given the designation Alpha, the next brightest Beta, and so on.
Usually these are double stars (mostly optical doubles rather than true binaries), but there are some exceptions such as the chain of stars π

Many bright stars lying within constellations have Bayer designations using the Greek alphabet (from Alpha to Omega, generally by decreasing brightness) and/or a Flamsteed number (beginning with 1, based on position in its constellation from left to right) and the genitive spelling of the Latin constellation name.
Most are Arabic names based upon the position of the star within the original Greek constellations -- which we refer to using Roman translations of the Greek names.
While some begin with the cataloguer's last name (e.g., Ross or Wolf), most use just the first letter of the name(s), or some other abbreviation, to save space.
