Border Gateway Protocol - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
RFC 4271, A Border Gateway Protocol 4 (BGP-4) (obsoletes: RFC 1771)
The current version of BGP, BGP version 4, is specified in request for comment RFC 4271 (as per Jan 2006).
BGP neighbours, or peers, are established by manual configuration between routers to create a TCP session on port 179, BGP speaker will periodically, every 60 seconds by default, send 19-byte keepalive messages to maintain the connection.

 RFC 1771 (rfc1771) - A Border Gateway Protocol 4 (BGP-4)
Note that quite often BGP, as specified in RFC 1105, is referred to as BGP-1, BGP, as specified in RFC 1163, is referred to as BGP-2, BGP, as specified in RFC1267 is referred to as BGP-3, and BGP, as specified in this document is referred to as BGP-4.
If the route is learned from a BGP speaker in the local autonomous system, either the value of the LOCAL_PREF attribute shall be taken as the degree of preference, or the local system shall compute the degree of preference of the route based on preconfigured policy information.
Whenever an authentication mechanism is specified for use within BGP, three things must be included in the specification: - the value of the Authentication Code which indicates use of the mechanism, - the form and meaning of the Authentication Data, and - the algorithm for computing values of Marker fields.

 Border Gateway Protocol (BGP)
When BGP is used between autonomous systems (AS), the protocol is referred to as External BGP (EBGP).
Q—Assume that a BGP router is learning the same route from two different EBGP peers.
If the local preferences are the same, prefer the path that was originated by BGP running on this router.

Define BGP - a Whatis.com definition - see also: Border Gateway Protocol
BGP (Border Gateway Protocol) is a protocol for exchanging routing information between gateway hosts (each with its own router) in a network of autonomous systems.
BGP communicates with autonomous (local) networks using Internal BGP (IBGP) since it doesn't work well with IGP.
The routers inside the autonomous network thus maintain two routing tables: one for the interior gateway protocol and one for IBGP.

TCP / IP Protocols - AH ESP TLS BGP-4 EGP EIGRP GRE HSRP IGRP
One such encapsulated protocol, the TLS Handshake Protocol, allows the server and client to authenticate each other and to negotiate an encryption algorithm and cryptographic keys before the application protocol transmits or receives its first byte of data.
In particular, the protocol protects against the failure of the first hop router when the source host cannot learn the IP address of the first hop router dynamically.
The Internet Assigned Numbers Authority has assigned Protocol Number 50 to ESP. The header immediately preceding an ESP header will always contain the value 50 in its Next Header (IPv6) or Protocol (IPv4) field.

 Resource Reservation Aggregation
To reduce the protocol message traffic, routers may reserve domain bandwidth beyond the current load, so that sources can join or leave the tree or change their reservation without having to send messages all the way to the tree root for every such change.
In case of paths of equal weight, current BGP practice dictates that the router forward all packets over only one path.
In today's Internet, all unicast routing algorithms, including OSPF, RIP and BGP, define sink-based trees, one for each destination.
