Bus mastering - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Direct memory access is a simple form of bus mastering where the I/O device is set up by the CPU to read from or write to one or more immediate blocks of memory and then signal to the CPU when it has done so.
In a simple architecture only the CPU can be bus master: this means that all communications between input and output (I/O) devices must involve the CPU.
Full bus mastering (or "first-party DMA", "bus mastering DMA") implies that the I/O device is capable of performing more complex sequences of operations without CPU intervention.

 D. Glen Cardenas: SCSI vs. IDE pt. 6
Bus mastering is a very advanced means of transporting data to and from devices and/or memory using the PCI bus as a conduit.
Only one bus master can own, or "drive" the bus at a given instant, and the bus is responsible for arbitrating bus master requests from the various bus master devices.
The CPU is a bus master device, and is always present.

Information and help with the computer bus
A computer bus is a method of transmitting data from one part of the computer to another part of the computer.
One of the major downfalls of the MCA bus was it being a proprietary bus and because of competing bus designs.
When this bus was originally released it was a proprietary bus, which allowed only IBM to create peripherals and the actual interface.

Direct Memory Access (DMA) Modes and Bus Mastering DMA
Problems with implementing bus mastering DMA on systems in the 1996 to 1998 time frame were numerous: issues with buggy drivers, software the didn't work properly, CD-ROM drives that wouldn't work with the drivers, and so on.
Bus mastering allows the hard disk and memory to work without relying on the old DMA controller built into the system, or needing any support from the CPU.
This is also called bus mastering, because when such transfers are occurring the device becomes the "master of the bus".

 D. Glen Cardenas: SCSI vs. IDE pt. 5
Naturally, the Intel 810, 820 and 840 chip sets support bus mastering, but this chip set family is plagued with problems in the memory department and so at this point, a DAW using a motherboard with either of these three chip sets is a dicey matter.
It's important to understand that disk controllers are the bus the master devices on the PCI bus, not the drives themselves.
Bus mastering, being an advanced form of DMA, demands very specific motherboard chip set support as well as specific support from the hardware attempting to use it.

This bus is used to transfer data between the CPU and the main system bus, for example, or between the CPU and an external memory cache.
This bus is either a part of the processor bus itself, or in most cases is implemented separately by a dedicated chipset that is responsible for transferring information between the processor bus and the memory bus.
Two versions of the ISA bus exist, based on the number of data bits that can be transferred on the bus at a time.

 New Bus Architectures
The IEEE 1394 bus is a high-speed serial bus which originated as Apple Computer's "FireWire" bus (for brevity, we will refer to this bus as "1394").
One device is identified as the "bus manager", which is responsible for bus power-management, performance optimization, maintenance of bus-connection information and (optionally) isochronous bandwidth management.
The 1394 bus has been defined in two distinct electrical environments: a backplane environment and a cable environment.

The 1212 I/O operates as a PCI bus master.
A frequently-asked 1212 I/O question is, "will the 1212 I/O work better in a bus master slot?" The quick answer is that it will *only* work in a bus master slot; fortunately, most recent computers, both MacOS and Windows 95/98, support bus masters in all slots.
This simply means that it can take control of the bus, in order to transfer audio data to and from the computer's RAM.

What to Consider if you are Planning to Purchase a System with Bus Master IDE
Bus Mastering IDE technology implements logic circuitry on your motherboard that, when configured properly with other elements of your system, can reduce the CPU's work of retrieving and/or storing data on your hard disk drive or other IDE device.
Implementing Bus Master IDE technology requires advanced knowledge of the PC hardware and software, as well as debug tools to optimize the system performance.
Bus Master IDE technology will probably not improve performance if your operating environment is characterized by the one of the following:

 PCI Bus Mastering
The PCI bus is the first bus to popularize bus mastering; probably in part because for the first time there are operating systems and software that are really capable of taking advantage of it.
PCI's design allows bus mastering of multiple devices on the bus simultaneously, with the arbitration circuitry working to ensure that no device on the bus (including the processor!) locks out any other device.
In a way, the PCI bus acts like a tiny "local area network" inside the computer, in which multiple devices can each talk to each other, sharing a communication channel that is managed by the chipset.
