Socket - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A CPU socket is a physical and electrical specification of how to connect a CPU to a motherboard.
A socket can be used in computer networking to form one end of a bi-directional communication link between two programs, likely over a network.
In electronics, a socket is also used as a synonym for a jack.

X-bit labs - Hardware news - AMD Athlon XP to Migrate to Socket 754.
According to the most-recent top-secret roadmaps of Sunnyvale, California-based Advanced Micro Devices, the cost-effective versions of AMD Athlon 64 processors known under code-names “Paris” and “Victoria” will be made in Socket 754 form-factors and will not be able to work in 64-bit mode as the higher-end Athlon 64 CPUs.
This means that software developers will not be very interested in optimizing their products for higher-end AMD 64-bit CPUs earlier than in 2005 or even later timeframe.
In order to replace the current Socket A platforms and force migration to the newer Socket 754 mainboards, AMD will make improved microprocessors that will be based on Athlon 64 architecture, but will be branded as “AMD Athlon XP” and will not be able to run advanced 64-bit applications for x86-64 architecture.

The Athlon64 CPUs that inhabit the socket 939 will pick up the benefits of dual channel memory while the 754-pin CPUs stay with single channel.
We compare Intel's 3.4EE and legacy CPUs as well.
Now that we have all of this out of the way, let's move to the rest of our contenders and see how they stack up against Intel and past CPUs.

Socket 940 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The reason for this is due to the fact that all 64-bit AMD processors, unlike all current Intel processors, include the memory management functionality not as a discrete chip on the motherboard, but rather on the CPU die itself.
Being an intended server platform, processors using this socket only accept registered, ECC memory, because with servers and workstations, memory errors are less acceptable and cause more damage.
Note that, regardless of the socket form factor, all 64-bit AMD processors will run all of the same software; they are all fully binary-compatible.

CPU socket - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The CPU socket or slot is the connector that interfaces between a computer's motherboard and the processor itself.
