 Arithmetic Channel Coding
Arithmetic coding is a source coding algorithm which encodes the output of any discrete stationary source into a sequence of independent and uniformly distributed random variables.
Though this may seem like an unusual channel coding algorithm, we show that every block code and every convolutional code can also be implemented by an arithmetic encoder.
The encoder is used to encode a binary symmetric source to be transmitted over a binary symmetric channel.

Department TAIT - Lecture Channel Coding
Channel coding is heavely based on algebra and probability theory.
In such systems errors can occur randomly and channel coding is applied to correct these errors.
This redundancy is used by the channel decoder to correct errors in the received data or in the data read from the storage medium.

 Joint source channel coding
This class of codes naturally extends codes based on binary codetrees and encompass codes which can be regarded as finite state automata including quasi-arithmetic codes.
Two algorithms have been designed: the first algorithm follows sequential decoding principles, in the spirit of the Fano algorithm used for decoding channel codes, with an extra difficulty here residing in the fact that transitions on the coding decision tree are associated to a varying number of bits.
Increasing the polyphase filter order adds memory to the code and an OFB can be interpreted as a convolutional code over the real or complex field.

CCSR - EPSRC projects - Source and channel coding - final report summary
The main objective of the work was to examine the possibility of combining both source and channel coding for mobile multimedia communications and to develop a communication protocol in the light of the error performance study of both speech and video coding algorithms used in conjunction with channel-coding techniques.
AWGN and Rayleigh channels, with and without multipath fading and diversity, were analysed and tested in the simulations and the results were used to evaluate the performance of the developed error-resilience schemes.
A detailed study of the error performance of the ITU-T H.263 video coding algorithm was carried out when the video stream was transmitted over a modelled mobile channel with different error patterns and various bit error rates.

 [No title]
The design of a speech coding algorithm is determined by the major requirements of high (subjective) speech quality, low bit rate, low computational complexity, high robustness against channel errors and low algorithmic delay.
The switching is based on a classification of the input signal.
Speech coding algorithms can be classified into waveform coders, vocoders and hybrid coders.

 Joint Source-Channel Coding
It is well known that using progressive codes in the presence of channel errors leads to disastrous results, since the first error renders the remainder of the bitstream useless.
Shannon's separation theorem states that source coding (compression) and channel coding (error protection) can be performed separately and sequentially, while maintaining optimality.
This experiment shows that even a benign channel can wreck havoc on a progressive bitstream, so some form of error protection (channel coding) is necessary.

3rd GPP Multiplexing and channel coding (FDD)
Channel coding scheme is a combination of error detection, error correcting, rate matching, interleaving and transport channels mapping onto/splitting from physical channels.
The encoded blocks are serially multiplexed so that the block with lowest index is output first from the channel coding block.
K-1 tail bits (value 0) shall be added to the end of the code block before encoding.

CCSR - Multimedia and DSP Research Group - Current Projects - Channel Coding
These latter codes are constructed using a block interleaver and we have considered both binary and symbol based interleavers.
Since upper level need the coded sequence of lower levels, a highly reliable turbo re-encoder has to be designed.
In our simulations, we have considered (extended) RS codes of length 16 and, on a Gaussian channel, can achieve gains over the uncoded case of around 5dB at a BER of 10-5 with a maximum number of decoding attempts corresponding to around 103 operations per information bit.

Jeffrey O. Coleman - EE590A Trellis Coded Modulation
Typically students design our first trellis code, develop the idea of set partitioning for labeling a trellis with outputs, and derive the Viterbi (or other) algorithm for maximum-likelihood sequence estimation in the receiver.
EE507 result--that system performance is ultimately determined by three properties of the signal set, (1) its minimum Euclidean distance, (2) its error coefficient, and (3) its average energy--the idea of free codes of N -dimensional signals is examined.
(Little or no probability theory is used in the course.) Trellis-design concepts are developed based slightly on early work of Ungerboeck and heavily on the recent work on group trellis codes of Forney and Trott.

 MIMO Channels and Space-Time Coding
Examples are studied by emulating the propagation environment of MIMO channels.
We present performance results of space-time codes, their optimal detection -- trellis codes, as well as the complexity of codes.
Next the multiple-input multiple-ouput (MIMO) channel is considered and related to the parallel Gaussian channel via the singular value decomposition (SVD).

The Laws of Cryptography: Coding and Information Theory
The simplest example of such a channel is the binary symmetric channel.
However, for decoding one must find the code word in the table that most closely matches the received code word (that has errors from the noise on the channel).
We will usually be using binary codes, that is, codes that use only the binary bits

A Tutorial on Convolutional Coding with Viterbi Decoding
The process of adding this redundant information is known as channel coding.
Simulation source code examples of these algorithms follow the algorithm descriptions.
Following this introduction, I will provide a detailed description of the algorithms for generating random binary data, convolutionally encoding the data, passing the encoded data through a noisy channel, quantizing the received channel symbols, and performing Viterbi decoding on the quantized channel symbols to recover the original binary data.

This is an edited volume of papers by researchers in the field; topics include: vector quantization, fractals, optical algorithms, massively parallel hardware, and coding theory.
However, with on-line data compression where a sender and receiver are in lock-step maintaining constantly changing identical local memories, a single error on the communication channel or storage medium could cause the dictionaries of the encoder and decoder to differ, which in the worst case could corrupt all data to follow.

Therefore, it is possible to send 0.4 bits per channel through the channel reliably.
