Character (computing) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In computer and machine-based telecommunications terminology, a character is a unit of information that roughly corresponds to a grapheme, or symbol, in the written form of a natural language.
Many computer fonts consist of glyphs that are indexed by the Unicode code point of the character that each glyph represents.
This article is about units of textual information in computers and telecommunication networks.

optical character recognition (OCR), method for the machine-reading of typeset, typed, and, in some cases, hand-printed letters, numbers, and symbols using optical sensing and a computer.
A computer program analyzes the patterns and identifies the characters they represent, with some tolerance for less than perfect and uniform text.

Glossary of Selected Computing and Social Science Terms
Often computers work with chunks of bits rather than one bit at a time; the smallest chunk of bits a computer usually works with is a byte which is 8 bits.
In UNIX a newline character is one byte: a linefeed.
character encoding scheme, a packed decimal format might use a binary number to indicate the value of the digit in 4 bits of the byte and a code indicating whether the digit is positive or negative in the other 4 bits.

Multilingual data processing in the CELLAR environment
Sponsored by Association for Computers and the Humanities, Association for Computational Linguistics, and Association for Literary and Linguistic Computing.
Ours is a multilingual world and the promise of universal computing cannot be realized until we have an adequate solution to the problem of multilingualism in the computing environment.
The Summer Institute of Linguistics (through its Academic Computing Department) has embarked on a project to build a computing environment that is truly multilingual.

 Wells: Orthographic diacritics
This is inadequate in the global computing environment.
Even though still used in most computing systems, the ASCII 7-bit code space and its 8-bit extensions are inexorably limited to 128 and 256 code positions respectively.
In this article we discuss the various diacritics that are so used and the problems this has given rise to in a multilingual computing environment — problems now arguably on the way to a satisfactory solution through the adoption of the international standard known as Unicode.

 Text encoding - Enpsychlopedia
Since text is a sequence of characters, an encoding involves issues including the repertoire of characters to be represented, the mapping from this character repertoire to numeric values, and the details of the binary representation of the character values.
A text encoding is a method of representing text as binary values in computer storage.
When computer professionals discuss "encodings" (particularly in the context of XML), they are quite likely to be referring to this integer-to-binary mapping.

Character - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In computing, a unit of information in computer storage or communications; see character (computing).
In mathematics, there are several meanings of the word character, all related to the idea of homomorphisms into the complex numbers.

Technical Note: Choice and Identification of XML Character Encodings
In the context of computing, character set usually refers to a set of characters in which a unique numeric value is assigned to each character.
For example, a string datatype of a programming environment may have to be in a predetermined encoding, as in UTF-16 in Java character or the database character set in SQL character datatypes.
This feature is provided for optimization purposes and considered to be an exception, as it is intended for use in scenarios where it is known that the data consists of characters in the specified character set.

 Kevin's computing glossary: character set
The basic set of letters and symbols that a computer uses, or are included in a particular font.
Another popular standard is the ASNI character set which has 256 symbols and is used by most Windows fonts.
Until recently it was standard to use a basic set of only 256 characters (i.e., one byte per character) but it is increasingly common to use a 2-byte character set to account the enormous range of symbols and non-English letters in use.

This unification is referred to as "Han Unification", with the resulting character repertoire sometimes referred to as "Unihan".
Han characters are generally described as "ideographic", i.e., picture-writing; but see the reference below.
However, in the formulation of Unicode, these differences were folded, in order to conserve the number of code positions necessary for all of CJK.

 Hash character - Computing Reference - eLook.org
The name "octothorpe" was made up by a Bell Labs supervisor, Don Macpherson.
The character is usually pronounced "hash" outside the US.
The US usage derives from an old-fashioned commercial practice of using a "#" suffix to tag pound weights on bills of lading.
