Part 4 - Digital Inputs - Switching Circuits
A closed switch on the hazardous side operates a relay or optocoupler output on the non-hazardous side.
They also are known as binary, on-off, 0/1, or simple switching signals where a switch is either opened or closed.
Switching through safety barriers is also possible when the input is taken back to a DCS.

 A Wizard's Electronics Companion
A well-designed analog circuit may have an efficiency of 5%, but an equally well-designed switching circuit which might accomplish the same task can achieve better than 99%.
Improvements are constantly being made in the electronic switches themselves, too.
These fast transients are what create most of our noise problems in circuits to begin with because they generate stray fields which can affect nearby circuitry.

His insight that all data could be encoded as a series of 1's and 0's pioneered the breakthrough in digital electronics that led to the modern digital computer and telecommunications networks.

A virtual network is also software defined, and provides circuits that are based upon the public switched networks to define a virtual channel.
Multiple switches can be used, but if so, they must each maintain a complete table of all nodes and segments.
Such a solution is currently implemented with switching technologies.

Stanford Computer Forum - Research Projects
The name TCP Switching comes because the architecture is optimized for the most common type of flow, i.e TCP connections.
The main reason is that now we can build extremely high capacity all-optical switches using this technology, whereas it is not possible to design them using packet switching.
This project first tries to asses the role that circuit switching may play in the future of the Internet.

 Pulse Power Switching Devices
The switch is possibly the most elementary device in the field of electronics.
This may just be coincidence, but as there is no apparent reason why a sprytron couldn't be used in either role, it also occurs to me that possibly such a design might be significant in the design of nuclear warheads, certainly this would appear to be a useful combination (see section 4).
If you want to switch 50 kilo Amperes with a sub 20 nanosecond commutation time at 20kV you are going to be in trouble if you are relying on semiconductor technology.

Reversible Circuits In the 60s and 70s, theoretical physicists considered the theoretical limits of computation, and founded a specialty called “the physics of computation” [3, 7, 10, 11].
It may be necessary to evolve fault tolerant nano-scale circuits based on similar neural network ideas, with the artificial neurons having large numbers of artificial synapses, or connections.
They will also need to be (as far as possible) reversible circuits, to avoid the heat dissipation problem if bits of information are routinely wiped out during the computational process.

PlanetAnalog.com - Linear versus switching power supplies - Part 4 of an introduction to analog circuit design
For these reasons this transistor is optimized for Ohmic losses, as opposed to switching behavior.
So it happens that every time a CMOS designer needs to build a precise band-gap voltage reference he has to dig deep down in the scraps of his arsenal, and pull out the parasitic bipolar transistor as the only means to build a decent voltage reference.
Not surprisingly then, this transistor is optimized for switching performance, as opposed to Ohmic.

News.NanoApex.com - CU provides a key component for light-switching photonic circuits
The approach developed by Michal Lipson, Cornell assistant professor of electrical and computer engineering, confines the beam to be switched in a circular resonator, greatly reducing the space required and allowing a very small change in refractive index to shift the material from transparent to opaque.
Previous work on nanoscale optical waveguides and photonic coupling is described in a paper, "Overcoming the limitations of microelectronics using Si nanophotonics: solving the coupling, modulation and switching challenges," published in the Institute of Physics journal Nanotechnology, Aug. 2, 2004.
This light is absorbed by the silicon through a process known as two-photon absorption, creating many free electrons and "holes" (positively charged regions) in the material.

Building Blocks for Linear Switching Circuits
In the binary case (that is the case that underlies my project), the adder is an exclusive or logical block, and the memory device is either a delay device, as those seen in Section 2.3, or a single stage of ordinary binary shift register.
The devices considered are the adder, which has two inputs and returns on its output the sum
The only rule to be observed for interconnection of these devices, is that any number of inputs may be connected to any output, but two outputs can never be connected together.

Square wave - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Square waves are universally encountered in digital switching circuits and are naturally generated by binary (two-level) logic devices.
To avoid this problem in very sensitive circuits such as precision analogue to digital converters, sine waves are used instead of square waves as timing references.
(The ringing transients are an important electronic consideration here, as they may go beyond the electrical rating limits of a circuit).

Microprocessors in computers may require a power supply circuit that regulates a high level of current while maintaining a high level of efficiency.
Switching regulators typically provide an output with a lower voltage than the unregulated input while at the same time providing an output with a higher current than the current drawn from the unregulated supply.
A disadvantage with switching regulators is known as the"ripple effect."The ripple effect refers to ripples that are periodic variations in the output voltage that have to be smoothed out in order to generate a genuine DC current.
