Collocations are words that commonly occur together, whether informal or not.
Or is slang one word and collocation is a phrase?
However people do use colloquialism the way you have to refer to a particular idiomatic expression so there is a cross-over between a colloquialism and an idiom.

Colloquialism - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A colloquialism can sometimes make its way into otherwise formal speech, as a sign that the speaker is comfortable with his or her audience, in contrast to slang, which if used in formal speech is more likely done so consciously for humorous effect.
Dictionaries often display colloquial words and phrases with the abbreviation colloq.
Colloquialisms can include words (such as "gonna" or "grouty"), phrases (such as "ain't nothin'" and "dead as a doornail"), or sometimes even an entire aphorism ("There's more than one way to skin a cat").

 Ruskin and Colloquialism
Does the interplay of direct simple language with complex analysis serve multiple purposes?
I am not aware if the term "getting-on" was a colloquial phrase during Ruskin's time.
If it is a common phrase then does Ruskin intend to use such colloquialism in the same sentences as rich historical/social commentary for a specific reason?

Persnickety, for example, is a colloquialism in its meaning “fussy, overparticular,” and most contractions—i.e., isn’t, shouldn’t, it’s, they’re—are Colloquial.
Some dictionary users incorrectly understand Colloquial to be a pejorative label, but it is actually no more pejorative than a field-restrictive label (such as mathematics or music) would be: a Colloquial usage is Standard English, but only in a Colloquial situation.
In this book any locution labeled Conversational or Colloquial is acceptable at the Conversational or Colloquial levels of speech (mainly Intimate, Casual, and Impromptu) and in the written levels that imitate them (Informal and Semiformal).
