 Computer multitasking - Wikipedia
In computing, multitasking is a method by which multiple tasks may execute, apparently simultaneously, on a single computer processor.
Another reason for multitasking was in the design of real time computing systems, where a number of possibly unrelated external activities needed to be controlled by a single processor system.
This approach, which was eventually supported by many computer operating systems, is today known as Cooperative multitasking.

multitasking --  Britannica Concise Encyclopedia - The online encyclopedia you can trust!
Multitasking is used to keep all of a computer's resources at work as much of the time as possible.
Two programs can be executed on a small computer using a foreground/background system, in which the computer executes the instructions of one program only in between the times it devotes to running another program of higher priority.

Computers which are capable of "preemptive multitasking" are generally more powerful than those which are simple "multitasking" computers.
A computer's operating system will arrange and organize its files, keep track of memory resources, coordinate the use of the computer's main processor, and provide an interface for the user to interact with the computer.
As a rule, most computers are powerful enough to handle preemptive multitasking, at least those made since the mid-1980s, but usually these computers don't have that ability because of the limitations of their operating systems.

Multitasking is great for using more than one program (for example, a Netscape Browser with your Assignment and a copy of Microsoft Word that you are writing your assignment in).
Your computer might be set up to hide the taskbar, but if you move your cursor over the bottom of your screen, the taskbar should appear.
