Rendering (computer graphics) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Rendering is the process of generating an image from a model, by means of a software program.
Rendering for movies often takes place on a network of tightly connected computers known as a render farm.
On the inside, a renderer is a carefully engineered program, based on a selective mixture of disciplines related to: light physics, visual perception, mathematics, and software development.

Martin Centre CADLAB - Interactive Computer Rendering
The economics of computer rendering depend primarily on the complexity of the model, usually estimated by a polygon count, and secondarily on the sophistication of the optical simulation.
A theoretically perfect rendering from a computer model would be indistinguishable from a photograph of the realised object.
A computer model of a building represents the salient points by means of three-dimensional (x, y, z) co-ordinates, linked together to define the boundaries of planes.

SIGGRAPH Computer Graphics Newsletter - Applications of Computer Vision to Computer Graphics - November 99
Image-based rendering approaches three-dimensional graphics problems by designing data structures that can be robustly computed from images and can subsequently be used to create high quality images at minimal computational cost.
November 1999 Applications of Computer Vision to Computer Graphics
This suggests that image-based rendering can be achieved by combining computer vision and computer graphics techniques.

 Computer Graphic Rendering
In response to increasing demand for the use of rendering in design and manufacturing, the models used in these programs have undergone intense research in the computer graphics community.
We are collaborating with Gary Meyer of Computer and Information Sciences Department at the University of Oregon and Gregory Ward Larson of SGI.
As part of the NIST competency project entitled "Measurement Science for Optical Reflectance and Scattering", Fern Hunt of MCSD 891 is coordinating the development of a computer rendering system that utilizes high quality optical measurements that will be used to render physically realistic and potentially photorealistic images.

 Volume Rendering
[17] J.T. Kajiya, "The Rendering Equation," Computer Graphics(Proc.
Volume rendering, a technique for visualizing sampled functions of three spatial dimensions by computing 2-D projections of a colored semitransparent volume, is extended to handle polygonally defined objects.
To avoid aliasing of polygonal edges at modest computational expense, a form of selective supersampling is used.

The Digital Fine Art of Robert W. McGregor — Technique
I write custom computer software tools, in a variety of programming languages, to help with complex mathematical calculations and object placement.
I use 3d computer software to completely create, in virtual 3d space, all of the objects presented in my concept sketches.
During the final creative phase I render a multitude of small-format test images, repeatedly adjusting the viewpoint, lighting, colors, composition, and materials until the vision that I see in my mind is made visible on the computer monitor.

 [Mar98]
This effort has led to mathematical models and algorithms that can compute predictive, or physically realistic, images from known camera positions and scene descriptions that include the geometry of objects, the reflectance of surfaces, and the lighting used to illuminate the scene.
Creating realistic images has been a major focus in the study of computer graphics for much of its history.
The second two inverse rendering problems solve for unknown reflectance, given images with known geometry, lighting, and camera positions.

 A Generic Rendering System
We describe the software architecture of a rendering system that follows a pragmatic approach to integrating and bundling the power of different low-level rendering systems within an object-oriented framework.
The generic rendering system provides higher-level abstractions to existing rendering systems and serves as a framework for developing new rendering techniques.
Four major categories of rendering components constitute the generic rendering system: shapes represent geometries, attributes specify properties assigned to geometries and scenes, handlers encapsulate rendering algorithms, and techniques represent evaluation strategies for rendering components.

Stylized Depiction: Non-Photorealistic, Painterly and 'Toon Rendering
Non-Photorealistic Computer Graphics: Modeling, Rendering, and Animation (2002) by Thomas Strothotte and Stefan Schlechtweg.
In computer graphics, photorealistic rendering attempts to make artificial images of simulated 3d environments that look "just like the real world." So non-photorealistic rendering (NPR) is any technique that produces images of simulated 3d world in a style other than realism.
Christopher G. Healey this course presentation surveys a number of issues in nonphotorealistic rendering and visual perception, then discusses their relevance to computer graphics and scientific visualization through a series of descriptions, examples, and practical applications.

 Principles of Digital Image Synthesis
This is a two-volume book on the basic ideas behind using a computer to create realistic, synthetic images of 3D scenes.
The book is constructed upon three basic fields of knowledge, which I believe form the basis for all modern forms of digital image synthesis: the human visual system, signal processing, and energy transport.
