Consensus - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In computer science, consensus is sometimes used to refer to the problem of achieving coherency among nodes of a distributed computer system.
Achieving consensus is a challenging problem in distributed systems, particularly as the number of nodes grows or the reliability of links between nodes decreases.

Consensus does not use one of the standard GCG file formats as its input file, but instead requires a file in a specific format that you must create with a text editor.
Consensus makes no attempt to align the sequences in the input file, so you should be sure that they are optimally aligned before running the program.
FitConsensus uses the Consensus output table as a probe to search for the best examples of the derived consensus in other nucleotide sequences.

Like any group decision-making, consensus decision-making can disempower those not present in the debating forum, as they cannot expect to have input on the new measures that are proposed (whereas they might have had the opportunity for input into the known alternatives prior to the debate).
However, there are many examples of groups who employ consensus decision-making in ways that enable them to both consider minority views and make decisions in a timely and efficient manner.
An open discussion needs to be animated by a process that moves towards a timely, and sound, decision that is supported by all.

Consensus building (also known as collaborative problem solving or collaboration) is a conflict-resolution process used mainly to settle complex, multiparty disputes.
Consensus building offers a way for individual citizens and organizations to collaborate on solving complex problems in ways that are acceptable to all.
The author argues that the sources of current impasses are "as much conceptual and organizational as they are technical and economic," and so offers a model of collaboration designed to alleviate these conceptual and organizational roadblocks to problem solving and conflict resolution.

 What's Wrong With Consensus
When one understands the purpose of consensus, that it is intended to produce the Oneness of Mind necessary to dialectical materialism, one understands why it stands counter to the best interests of our country.
And true to definition, each member of the "consensus circle" is expected to abide, support, and accept ownership of the "synthesis of opposing views." This obviously means that people must change their existing belief systems in order to come to consensus — to Oneness of Mind.
Thus the need for facilitators — professional change agents, trained in group dynamics and on the intricacies of how to move a group to a preset conclusion.

In disputes, the term consensus is often used as if it means anything from genuine consensus to my position; it is possible to see both sides in a revert war claiming a consensus for its version of the article.
Nevertheless, some often-used processes seem to intepret consensus to have been reached if the proportion of concurring editors has reached a particular level.
This interpretation is exemplified by the following description of consensus, from the mailing list:

Although CONSENSUS® identifies the 75 percent level as the overbought level and the 25 percent level as the oversold level, these points should be interpreted not as absolute reversal points, but rather as approximate levels of potential market shifts.
Following the same reasoning, when a predominant number of market analysts are bearish, it is quite likely that the market is approaching an oversold condition, and that a reversal in trend may be imminent.
The theory of contrary opinion would hold that when a predominant number of market analysts are bullish, it is quite likely that the market is approaching an overbought condition, and that a reversal in trend may be imminent.
