Console emulator - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A console emulator is a program that allows a computer to emulate a video game console.
Console games for emulators are generally distributed as ROM images (or simply "ROMs") on the Internet.
Generally, the emulation was accomplished through special hardware—unlike modern console emulation, which generally reproduces the functionality of a system entirely through software.

Typically, an emulator is written by a software guru who has some genuine interest in the console being emulated, for one reason or another.
Console emulators are almost never written for profit, instead as a private project out of sheer curiosity and personal interest.
