DEC Alpha - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
DEC management doubted the need to produce a new computer architecture to replace their existing VAX and DECstation lines, and eventually killed the PRISM project in 1988.
Alpha was born out of an earlier RISC project named PRISM, itself the final product of several earlier projects.
Another study was started to see if a new RISC architecture could be defined that could directly support the VMS operating system.

Advancing the Art of PRISM Analysis
PRISM (Advanced Version 1) is available to members of Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) through the EPRI Software Center.
To make PRISM more useful and accessible and to accommodate all of the new features, a user interface was developed in an interactive Windows-based program.
The starting point for a new PRISM analysis is the same as before: a meter file of monthly consumption data (see Table 1), and a temperature file of daily temperature data from a nearby weather station.

 NodeWorks - Encyclopedia: DEC PRISM
By this time DEC was already working with the MIPS R3000 design for workstation machines, and had recently formed the Advanced Computing Environment consortium to popularize MIPS-based machines.
Another unique feature of the PRISM was Epicode, for extended processor instruction code, a software-defined set of microcode instructions.
It was the final outcome of a number of DEC-internal research projects from the 1982-85 time-frame, and was at the point of delivering silicon in 1988 when management cancelled the project.

The Prism tool was to be a complete programming environment built around the Prism metacode.
You can see Prism's goals in the Prism manifesto (http://www.teleport.com/~sphere/documents/001d/draft/index.html), but here's the list: 1) Create a way for metaprograms to interoperate (well on its way) 2) Create a way for codes to interoperate 3) Make codes interactive and visual, and highly domain specific.
None of the current generic Prism languages allow it, but there's no reason that couldn't be changed.

Scientific Graphing - Create graphs of any type, pie charts, histograms with these programs. Edit them to create ...
Most important is that you have designed PRISM as a scientist who understands the importance of linking raw data with their analyses in a lucid way which makes explicit sense.
Prism did all the analyses and made all your graphs automatically, and you didn't have to write any macros.
"Prism is a neat, compact, and flexible program with a clean interface that can be used to plot and analyze two-dimensional datasets… A major strong point (of Prism) is the extraordinary way in which the documentation and online help provide instruction in the principles of data analysis… Prism is an easy-to-learn and fairly flexible package.

Wired News: Prism Brightens Handheld Market
In many ways, reading on the Prism is easier on your eyes and RSI-prone wrists than reading on a computer monitor.
Apart from PocketPCs, which are based on Microsoft's Windows CE operating system, the Prism's only competition comes from the Palm IIIc, a lower-priced color handheld from Palm.
Together, these make the Prism more like a mini handheld computer than a humble organizer with a nice display.

 Dave Cutler: Information From Answers.com
The Star and Starlet projects culminated in the development the VAX 11/780 computer and the VAX/ VMS operating system.
The RISC machine was to be based on ECL technology and was one of three ECL projects DIGITAL was undertaking at the time.
Later, he worked on targeting Windows NT to Digital's 64-bit Alpha computer (itself based on the Prism design), then on Windows 2000.

 Windows-NT is VMS re-implemented
It soon became apparent that the only way I was going to get the opportunity to work on implementing a real operating system was to join a company that made computers for a business.
Dave becomes a Microsoft employee and is put in charge of developing Windows-NT (new technology) which will run on multiple target platforms (initially: Intel 386/486, MIPS.
March 1988, DEC killed Prism (and with it Emerald) so they could build new systems based upon RISC chips from MIPS

Profile Prism users - does it do the job?
You can learn a lot about the software on a Profile Prism user forum at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/prismtalk.
You then open the TIF file, mark the corners as required, and the software will generate a profile and save it in the location specified by you.
PP then creates the profile for your printer/paper from this scan.

 VisorCentral.com - Prism View *.jpg's?
Once PiViewer, which reads SmartMedia, is removed from the memory of the MemPlug and placed in the Prism's memory, I see no reason why it shouldn't read a CF card in a MatchBook drive the same way it accesses the SmartMedia.
Is there any way to bypass the computer, and just do everything in the prism?
If I'm on vacation, I can always find a computer to allow me to do the transfer.

Perhaps kdam can help, since it works in the toolbar panel.

As a result of all this PRISM is becoming extremely busy in the area of DataStage®, where we are being asked to discuss, demonstrate and advise on implementation this comprehensive, legacy system and data saving, and cost effective product.
Depending on the type of support of the larger file structure by the underlying operating system, this can be in the high Terabytes!
This matrix is to assist PRISM customers in their decision to upgrade to the latest version of the U2 and DataStage platform.

ASEE PRISM invites you to share your data, anecdotes, and thoughts on the subject, as well as any "cybersleuthing" suggestions you may have: send your comments to: prism@asee.org.
Both approaches seem likely to underestimate the problem for several reasons: educators do not report every incident, many students are never caught, and not all students will own-up to cheating, even on an anonymous survey.

45 degree vs. 90 degree prism finders
The only disadvantage of 45deg prism is that you are still shooting close to waist level, but you have decide yourself how much of a problem it is for you.
I like the 45deg prism more because I do not have to lift the camera to the eyelevel, which saves lots of strain on muscles.
It's a strange position by hand, but no problem with a tripod or copy stand.
