Data General Nova - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Data General developed a wide range languages for the Nova computers running under a range of consistent operating systems.
The Nova's biggest competition was from the newly-born DEC PDP-11 computer series, and to a lesser extent the venerable DEC PDP-8 systems.
Data General itself would later evolve into a vendor of Intel processor-based servers and storage arrays, eventually being purchased by EMC.

 A Brief History
Developments between the mid 1930's and the early 1950's are commonly though of as the "first generation" of modern computers.
Machines such as the DEC VAX and Data General MV series have become "superminis." These processors differ from current mainframes principally in their less elaborate input-output processors and more limited capacity for data storage.
The Analytical Engine was intended to solve general arithmetic problems and introduced the concept of data storage.

Minicomputer is a largely obsolete term for a class of multi-user computers which make up the middle range of the computing spectrum, in between the largest multi-user systems (mainframe computers) and the smallest single-user systems (microcomputers or personal computers).
The term evolved in the 1960s to describe the "small" third generation computers that became possible with the use of transistor and core memory technologies.
Today at the turn of the millennium few minicomputers are still in use, having been overtaken by Fourth Generation computers built using a more robust version of the microprocessor technology that is used in personal computers.

Computer, Telephony and Electronics Glossary and Dictionary
All data that a computer processes must be encoded digitally, as a series of zeroes and ones.
In addition to the decimal format, computer data is often represented in binary (base 2), octal (base 8), and hexadecimal (base 16) formats.
While data is usually information resulting from or produced by a program, it can be the programs themselves.

 MITEM's Data General Solutions
The 1990s saw the introduction of Data General’s UNIX based platforms (DG-UX), the AViiON and CLARiiON and then in 1999 the company was acquired by EMC, a major data storage company.
The DG legacy platforms, as with many mainframe and midrange systems of the day were never designed to integrate with other computer systems.
In 1974 the Nova was superseded by the introduction of the Eclipse platform which supported virtual memory and multi-tasking.

Great Microprocessors of the Past and Present
The 68020 (1984) expanded external data and address bus to 32 bits, simple 3-stage pipeline, and added a 256 byte cache (loop buffer), while the 68030 (1987) brought the MMU onto the chip (it supported two level pages (logical, physical) rather than the segment/page mapping of the Intel 80386 and IBM S/360 mainframe).
A microprocessor generally means a CPU on a single silicon chip, but exceptions have been made (and are documented) when the CPU includes particularly interesting design ideas, and is generally the result of the microprocessor design philosophy.
Program and Data memory were separate, 1K data memory and a 12-bit PC for 4K program memory (in the form of a 4 level stack, used for CALL and RET instructions).

The Nova ISP was implemented in a single LSI chip in 1976, a feat not yet matched by the PDP-11 as of 1979.
The generic Nova implementation consists of a single fast loop from register file to ALU, to shifter, to condition code sensing, and back to the register file (see Fig.
Whereas the PDP-11 sought to increase the semantic content of instructions, the Nova designers sought an ISP whose implementations would be simple, provide high performance, and be oriented toward MSI technology.

For data leaving the computer, this is the source; for data entering the computer, this is the recipient.
The division of memory access and I/O instructions is in keeping with the fact that the Nova has discrete bus structures for these two functions.
At its' core, the Nova set has 3 basic classes of instructions; these are I/O Instructions, Memory Reference Instructions, and Arithmetic and Logic Instructions.

The venture capitalist's insistance on avoiding the term computer was based on the stereotype that computers were big and expensive, needing a computer center and a large staff; by using the term Programmable Data Processor, or PDP, DEC avoided this stereotype.

 The Ultimate RISC
In general, RISC machines are characterized by fixed format instructions and extensive use of pipelined execution, while CISC machines have variable length instructions and extensive use of microprogramming.
The Nova has an instruction set in which most instructions can execute in a single fixed-length cycle involving an instruction fetch, and one of either a fetch, a store, or an operation on registers.
Some early drum machines, such as the British DEUCE computer, circa 1955, encoded the data part of their instruction set as a series of move instructions, but these machines typically also included a next-address field in each instruction, making them quite different from pure move machines.
