Topic: Data corruption

Data corruption - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Data corruption refers to computer data that when transmitted it arrives at its destination is different when it was transmitted from the source.
A special case is disk RAID arrays, where parity bits are commonly evaluated and stored (summed over the disk set for each given offset), and can be used to reconstruct the corrupted data in the event of the failure of a known single disk.
This is particularly important in banking, where an undetected bit-flip in a highly significant position could drastically affect an account balance, and in the use of encrypted or compressed data, where a bit-flip can make an extensive dataset unusable.

Propylon CTO Article - Data corruption and data correction in an XML world
Corruption in digital data is a continuum of scenarios.
With binary data, there is typically no way to look at the data outside of the application that created it.
On the other extreme, large chunks of data corruption can exist but still allow some use to be made of the data.

 'DB Validator' Tackles Data Corruption
In these cases, since the output data is written without error into the storage, the companies say the database cannot detect the corrupted data until it tries to read the data, at which time, a read error occurs and the system stops.
Corruption can occur in any or all of the layers before writing data into storage; for example, while passing through the operating system, channel adapter, or network.
While data corruption in storage networks is rare, it can be costly if the problem goes undetected for some time.

Correcting Data File Corruption - Basic
Corruption generally occurs when the information stored on your computer's hard drive or on diskettes becomes damaged.
In some cases, when the file is located on a bad or corrupted location on a hard disk or diskette, copying a file to a new location will solve the problem.
In circumstances where a hard disk is not regularly maintained using Windows utilities (such as ScanDisk or Disk Defragmenter), files can lose integrity and become cross-linked, a situation where two or more files occupy the same physical space on the hard disk.

 Solving Oracle Data-Block Corruption
You can easily select data that is stored in segment blocks that precede the corrupted block by using a full table scan (via a cursor fetching rows one by one and at the same time saving them to a new table).
This message tells you that somewhere in your database, a block of data has been corrupted (at the byte level) in such a way that Oracle7 causes the internal exception to be raised each time a SQL statement accesses (reads or writes) that block.
The presence of an index on the corrupted table segment greatly aids in restoring the data, since it not only supplies all the rowids but also holds column values of rows that cannot be accessed inside the table segment.

STUREC.com -- How to recover from data corruption
Data/Index files are said to be "corrupt" if the data in the file is not arranged in the expected format, or if there is invalid data in the file.
In nearly all cases, file corruption is the result of a failure at either the Operating System (DOS/Windows) or the hardware level.
By far, the most common type of corruption is called "Cross-Linking", which is essentially a clerical-error on the Operating System's part where a particular location on the hard disk is marked as belonging to multiple files.

Integrity protection for your data and programs
The key to protecting your PC's programs and data against damage by a human being, buggy software, hardware glitches or other sources is to be able to check the integrity of all your files, CMOS data, and boot sectors.
With good data integrity protection, such drastic steps are not needed and hardware or software problems can be detected before they cause serious damage to the disk.
Sometimes this damage causes complete loss of a disk but more often this damage goes unnoticed or the user simply reinstalls some of the software on their PC and this fixes the mysterious problem.
