Database log - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In in the field of databases in computer science, a database log is a history of actions executed by a database management system.
Most logs' LSNs are assigned in monotonically increasing order, which is useful in recovery algorithms, like ARIES.
These tables are maintained in memory, and can be efficiently reconstructed (if not exactly, to an equivalent state) from the log and the database:

Database Mirroring in SQL Server 2005: Microsoft TechNet - SQL Server TechCenter
Database snapshots provide a read-only view of a database, exposing data that is consistent at the point of the snapshot creation.
When you query a database snapshot, you read original versions of any database data that has been changed after the snapshot's creation from the database snapshot's file, and you read unchanged data from the original database.
In that case, you might need one connection per database that you are querying, so that you do not attempt cross-database queries on a standby server where only one database is a principal and the remaining are mirrors.

CREATE DATABASE (Transact-SQL Reference (SQL Server))
If LOG ON is not specified, a single log file is automatically created with a system-generated name and a size that is the larger of these values:.5 MB or 25 percent of the sum of the sizes of all the data files for the database.
Databases need not have any secondary data files if the primary file is large enough to hold all of the data in the database.
LOG ON Specifies that the disk files used to store the database log (log files) are explicitly defined.

How to Perform Microsoft SQL Server Database Log Shipping
In order for the database user IDs (found in each database) to work on the standby server (where the database is restored), there must be a matching SQL Server login ID on that server, otherwise users will not be able to log into the database on the standby server.
The database or databases that are being failed over to the standby server cannot be used for anything else.
But if the transaction logs are on the same drive array as the database files, and the drive array fails, then you have lost any data entered into the system since the last log file was shipped to the standby server.

Berkeley DB Reference Guide: Database and log file archival
If the database log files are stored in a separate directory from the other database files, it may be simpler to archive the directory itself instead of the individual files (see the DB_ENV->set_lg_dir method for more information).
If the database files are stored in a separate directory from the other Berkeley DB files, it may be simpler to archive the directory itself instead of the individual files (see DB_ENV->set_data_dir for additional information).
Each time both the database and log files are copied to backup media, you may discard all previous database snapshots and saved log files.

Log Shipping in Microsoft SQL Server 2000
The secondary database can be made available for continuous read-only access only if you apply log backups when you do not need to run queries; if you do this, however, the data being queried will become more and more out of sync with the primary.
This table stores the history information for the log shipping plans: the maintenance plan name, the file name to be shipped, the source and destination databases, whether or not the process was a success, how long it took, and what error occurred if it was unsuccessful.
Since the secondary database is read-only, it can be used for reporting, such as in a DSS environment.

The main advantage of this option is that in certain databases it is much easier to view and search a long char field than a long binary field.
There are two different ways in which this binary data can be stored in the database.
This setting adds a delay to the processing of the log data to avoid database latency being an issue.
