Talk:Decipherment - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Perhaps, although we could keep it here, and simply have a disambiguation header at the top of the page saying something like "This article is about the analysis of documents in unknown languages; see cryptanalysis for a discussion of breaking secret codes and ciphers.
I have removed this definition (see text below) from the article, as it appears to be a personal concept, as opposed to a concept that is in general use: (a Google search for "philosophy decipherment" finds pages about the main sense, not this).
(Decipherment) Is usually considered the second step in comprehension after cryptanalysis

 Iconography Decipherment
Because of the many references and depth of study her work cannot really be ignored in the context of Neolithic interpretation and as such she is worthy of the additional label 'Archaeomythologist".
In other words the dicpherment could not be sustained across all complex symbol stones without rendering the interpretation too complex for a neolithic farming community which had simple stone tools in which to work with.
This was basically a unifying mathematical coding that attempted to map out each symbol as a piece of a complex jigsaw puzzle.

 Hieroglyphs and History at Copán
Consequently, the progress in decipherment at Copán has developed hand-in-hand with, and in some ways as a result of, methodological advances on a much broader front.
This required epigraphers not only to understand specific substitution patterns, but also to painstakingly refine their models of the way Maya writing in general worked as a graphical system.
One can see why the decipherment has been a long and arduous process over the years.

Middle East Open Encyclopedia: Sumerian language
Finding a place for the Sumerian language in modern analytic linguistics has proven to be a formidable challenge since the first steps of decipherment.
These issues notwithstanding, researchers have generally agreed on a few broad typological classifications for the language, as seen above.
Friedrich Delitzsch published a learned Sumerian dictionary and grammar in the form of his Sumerisches Glossar and Grundzüge der sumerischen Grammatik, both appearing in 1914.

 Lydian Intro
When examining these additional samples of Lydian writings from Sardis, I found out that my initial decipherment was in error.
I am basing my statement on comparison of the Lydian version to Greek alphabet not from Lydia.
Based on the present decipherment, the ancient Lydian language appears to be indentical to Etruscan, which survives as the present-day Ukrainian.

In this paper he discussed the fact that when the Mayan glyphs were broken down into their constituent parts, they were analogous to the ancient Libyco-Berber writing.
We summarize the decipherment of the Olmec writing.
It is generally accepted that the decipherment of an unknown language/script requires 1) bilingual texts and/or 2) knowledge of the cognate language(s).

Decipherment - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Decipherment is the analysis of documents written in ancient languages, where the language is unknown, or knowledge of the language has been lost.
Some people have also used the word metaphorically to mean something like 'understanding'.
It is closely related to cryptanalysis — the difference being that the original document was not deliberately written to be difficult to decipher.

 The Decipherment of Meroitic
I have deciphered Meroitic based on the most logical path to the decipherment of any dead language.
Below are a few decipherments of Meroitic offering tables.
I understand that these translations are tentative and that in the future other researchers may elaborate on these translations, just as I have expanded on the decipherment of Griffith.

 Alphabet Deciphered
This is a big subject and has many complexities, but the decipherment presented here will solve some of the world's ancient mysteries regarding the alphabet and other calendar systems, etc.
The tedious research I undertook required me to check out every possibility.
The science of epigraphy made possible the decipherment of the Egyptian hieroglyphs, cuneiform writing, the alphabet and the tarot.

World Mysteries - Strange Artifacts, Phaistos Disk
Eduard Dhorme, one of the decipherers of Hittite, published the first consonantal values for the Proto-Byblic script in SYRIA XXV 1946 in an article, "Dechiffrement des Inscriptions Pseudo-Hieroglyphicques de Byblos." A comparison of these values with the symbols of the Phaistos Disk yielded consonantal assignments for a surprising amount of the writing on the disk.
Since the text of the disk is so short, decipherment by the statistical cryptographic techniques employed by Michael Ventris in cracking Linear B are impossible.
Fischer's previous decipherment, of a Cretan artifact called the Phaistos Disk, provided the key to the ancient Minoan language and showed it to be closely related to Mycenaean Greek.

 Decipherment of cuneiform
Although the greater part of the decipherment process has now been accomplished, many smaller challenges still lie ahead.
The language written in this cuneiform alphabet (of which there is more than one version) is Semitic and soon the texts, which included many myths and legends, were rendered comprehensible, at least more or less.
Some represented syllables, others whole words, others still had a different function; and not only could one sign be read several different ways, but also different signs could be used to render the same sound or word.

Mahadevan 5: Earlier Attempts at Decipherment
The Finnish team also made use of computational linguistic techniques to deal with structural problems like word-division procedures and synctical analysis.
The analysis is sound; but his model of decipherment based on the Dravidian hypothesis (published in 1992 shortly before his death) has not been taken seriously because of his lack of familiarity with the Dravidian languages and linguistic techniques.
n his brief review of the earlier attempts at decipherment of the Indus script, Parpola takes no notice of the models based on the Indo-Aryan hypothesis, presumably because there is hardly anything in common between them and his own work.

Egypt: Hieroglyphics and its Decipherment, A Feature Tour Egypt Story
He also formulated a system for understanding the Egyptian grammar and evolved a method of decipherment that was used in the field long after.
This breakthrough smoothed the way for Jean Francois Champollion, who had been also hard at work on decipherment.
Young published the results of his four years of research in 1819 in an article entitled "Egypt" for the Supplement to the fourth edition of the Britannica.

 Decipherment
Indeed, there have been many incompatible "decipherments" of the disk: e.g.
Grotefend (1775-1853) started decipherment of Persian inscriptions from Persepolis, which led eventually to the decipherment of other cuneiform scripts since many Persian inscriptions were multilingual.
Demotic played an important role in the decipherment since:

 Phaistos Disk Decipherment update
Edgar Bowden has completed a decipherment of the disk.
Massimo Imperiali has created a beautiful page about the disk and describes his ideas which are based on the frequency of the signs.
Edgar Bowden has also completed a decipherment of the disk that can be read in his article "Ancient Greek alliterative verse-metrics on the Phaistos Disk: an Anatolian cult of Cybele Axe-Goddess and Poseidon Hippios" he claims that the text describes a religious culta and that the language is Greek.

 Rongo Rongo Tablets
An adequate summary of the rongorongo phenomenon, that details the subject up to the end of the 1930s, can be read in:
It is the famous "JAUSSEN LIST" which has been the basis of many an unsuccessful attempt at decipherment.
It is logographic in that glyph X represents a physical object: It's a single word or group of words that the glyph identifies (like "`Atua Mata Riri", or God Angry Eyes, as we hear in the 1886 chant).

 Decipherment
More sophisticated ciphers vary the number of digits each letter is moved forward using some familiar text or a pre-arranged code pad.
The plaintext is the goal of the decipherment, i.e., the text produced by applying the key to the ciphertext.
The ciphertext is the problem, which drives, D, the decipherment process forward.

 ANISTORITON: Viewpoints
The decipherment was, nevertheless, quite different from others, because it was not starting from some postulate concerning the origin of the Disk or the language used or the type of script, but was just based upon a 7-year statistical work.
In 1975, a decipherment was succinctly published in a French scientific journal by the present writer, who, not being on the faculty of any university, had been free to solve the enigma without being considered as a fool by his colleagues.
The "commas" attached to some hieroglyphs have been considered as a punctuation, as "viramas", or as verse-marks.

 BBC - h2g2 - The Decipherment of Linear B
He took this as an indication that the language used the system of changing the ending of a word to denote the word's function that is common in most European languages.
From that time on, Ventris and Chadwick worked together, using Ventris's knowledge of the symbols and Chadwick's knowledge of the language to produce a full decipherment.
In the end, he used just two similarities with the Cypriot system in his decipherment.

The decipherment of the Phaistos Disk (also written as Phaistos Disc) shows it to be an ancient hieroglyphic (pictographic and syllabic) Greek text consisting of an ancient pre-Euclidean lemma about mathematics.
There are still some small corrections to be made to my decipherment, since I have made some new discoveries in the many years since I first published this monograph, but in the main, the decipherment is correct.
I have reviewed this decipherment and it is correct - all other decipherments of the Phaistos Disc, previous or later than mine, are simply wrong, both in method as well as in their decipherment substance.

Special Circumstances: The Decipherment of Linear B by John Chadwick
Meanwhile, in 1952 he claimed to have discovered the key to the Minoan script (amazingly the first decipherment of the Mayan script also occured in 1952, see "Breaking the Maya Code").
This book is a lite version of the book John Chadwick co-authored with Michael Ventris called "Documents in Mycenaean Greek" (Cambridge University Press, 1956).
The decipherment process itself as documented here is an intellectual treat.

The Decipherment of Egyptian Hieroglyphics Text
The story of the decipherment is really the story of Jean-Francois Champollion of France because, although many others attempted to unravel hieroglyphics, it was only he who had the proper strategy for learning to translate the texts.
This aspect of hieroglyphics considerably complicated its decipherment but once the nature of the problem was recognized the decipherment could proceed.
This is a rough description but the Adkins' book gives the full story of the decipherment of hieroglyphics by Jean-Francois Champollion in the context of his life.

 The Story of Decipherment
He explains the process of decipherment largely from the point of view of the practitioners themselves, but in a way that laypeople can follow.
The great age of decipherment dawned in the mid-eighteenth century, at the time of the Enlightenment, with the Abbé Barthélemy's solution of the Palmyra script.
The author discusses the contributions to the science of decipherment made by theorists and practitioners, examining the intellectual developments that led to their outstanding achievements.

Mahadevan 14: Assessment of Parpola's model of decipherment
These specific problems are important and may have to be sorted out in the light of constructive criticisms from experts in the related disciplines.
At this level the two major problems as I see them are Parpola's excessive, almost obsessive, preoccupation with the 'Harappan religion', and the inexplicable absence of matters relating to the social life and administration of the Harappan polity, which one may reasonably expect to be recorded in the Indus inscriptions.
First, one can analyse his interpretations and readings of individual signs, some of which I have attempted above.

ON THE STORY OF THE DECIPHERMENT OF IBERIAN WRITING
The beginnings of the decipherment (more accurate is the term decoding) of the Iberian writing are a curious example of how a correct theoretical base could led to a wrong result, whereas a clearly wrong one lead to the right answer.
Gómez-Moreno decipherment of Iberian was almost complete though some significant advances and corrections have been made by Maluquer de Motes, Untermann and Rodríguez Ramos on Iberian, and by Schmoll and Villar on Celtiberian.
On the other hand, Schmoll distinguished between Sudlusitanian and Meridional and identified the vowel redundancy of Sudlusitanian writing, that was a crucial data in order to determine the vowel timbre of the syllabic signs.

 CATHOLIC ENCYCLOPEDIA: Demonology
Some idea of the antiquity of demonology and magical practices might be gathered from notices in the Bible or in classic literature, to say nothing of the argument that might be drawn from the universality of these beliefs and practices.
In consequence of their bearing on the problems of Biblical history, attention has been attracted to the evidence of the monuments in regard to such matters as the cosmology, the tradition of the Deluge, or the relations of Assyria and Babylon with the people of Israel.
But still more striking evidence has been brought to light by the decipherment of the cuneiform hieroglyphics which has opened a way to the study of the rich literature of Babylon and Assyria.

 Easter Island Decipherment
Fischer says that contrary to earlier suggestions that the script was a mnemonic device to help priests commit ritual texts to memory, rongorongo was a sophisticated writing system, the only indigenous script in Oceania before the twentieth century.
A major breakthrough in the decipherment of rongorongo, Easter Island's enigmatic script, has been made by Steven Fischer, a New Zealand scholar who believes most of the inscriptions represent the islanders' creation myths.

 Cryptologia: Rosetta Stone and decipherment
Published to accompany a major exhibition at the Museum celebrating the bicentenary of the Stone's discovery, the book includes an illustrated selection of more than 200 of the objects on display with 31 in full color.
Thomas Young made great advances, especially with the demotic text, but it was Jean-Francois Champollion who made the final breakthrough in 1822.
The Rosetta Stone is a fragment of a stela inscribed with a priestly decree in honor of Ptolemy V. The overriding importance of the text is not in its contents but in the fact that it is written in three scripts: hieroglyphic, demotic, and ancient Greek.
