CEDAR Devanagari Script Recognition
Devanagari text can be represented in 2 ways - Transliteration and Unicode formats.
Free software is available that can convert english into Devanagari based upon the transliteration format.
Optical Character Recognition for Devanagari is highly complex do to its rich set of conjuncts.

 CEDAR Devanagari Script Recognition
Given that a test bench for various Devanagari OCR algorithms was clearly lacking, we have worked on non-comprehensive testing of algorithms and OCR methodologies.
Devanagari Optical Character Recognition (OCR) is a very well-researched problem, with many groups actively researching it.
Most current research focuses on font representation or creating lexical libraries, while a comprehensive, central image data resource for devanagari script OCR has yet to be developed.

 THDL: Nepali Fonts
In order to view or input the Devanagari script in a digital context, it is necessary to have a Devanagari font installed on one's computer or to have a Unicode enabled computer which has a keyboard driver for Indian (and preferably Nepali) input.
To date, the use of Nepali Devanagari on computers has been limited by the lack of standard cross-platform fonts.
Mellel, a cheap word processor for OS X, is pretty good on Unicode input, but Devanagari half-characters are not rendered correctly.

 Lojban Wiki : Devanagari orthography
The Devanagari diphthong "ai", although beginning with a schwa, can be used for Lojban "ai".
Whoever was working on this, if you could describe this orthography in terms of the Unicode Devanagari code chart at: http://www.unicode.org/charts/PDF/U0900.pdf then a yudit keymap can be made very easily, and then pictures can be made even easier.
I'm currently making a graphic that will map Lojban to Devanagari, one-to-one, and I'll add a link here soon.

Devanagari - Test for Unicode support in Web browsers
The characters that appear in the first column of the following table depend on the browser that you are using, the fonts installed on your computer, and the browser options you have chosen that determine the fonts used to display particular character sets, encodings or languages.
Devanagari Web pages with UTF-8 encoding are supported by Internet Explorer 5 (or higher) with Windows 95 (or higher), by the iCab Web browser for Macintosh, and by Mozilla and Netscape 7.
Microsoft’s Windows 2000 and Windows XP include support for Unicode Devanagari.

First, the indigenous language would be corrupted with the introduction of Sanskrit words, after which the grammar would be Sanskritised which was finally followed by the forceful imposition of Devanagari as the last nail in the coffin.
The result of Sanskritisation and the enforcement of Devanagari are visible from the figures given in the table below.
One such barrier was the creation of an extremely complex script, Devanagari.

If you want to use 'standard' opentype fonts for Devanagari, you can try the latest (but still old/outdated) patch at http://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=215219 If you say that Mozilla 1.6b cannot be made to work, I give up.

Indic / Devanagari in Mozilla is broken « WordPress Support
Yes, it is a Mozilla problem - Mozilla apparently can't show justified Devanagari text, which is a big problem to me and the Indic users I am sure.
So I would say this is a Mozilla problem, not a WordPress problem.
Still I need to find a solution - and wonder why Mozilla shows Devanagari fine in some places and broken on pages like mine.

If you intend to embed the font so that it displays dynamically (to allow users to see Devanagari without their having to download anything other than your webpage), then you must advise them to use Netscape 4.5 (or higher) on a PC.

Each time that you want to have Devanagari show on the user's screen, prefix to the left and suffix to the right (using the angle brackets rather than the square ones).
