Digital signal processor - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
General purpose CPU's have ideas and influences from digital signal processors with Extensions such as the MMX extensions in the Intel IA-32 architecture instruction set (ISA).
takes digital data from ADC and passesout data which are finally output by converting into analog by DAC.
In 1979, Bell Labs introduced the first single chip DSP, the Mac 4 Microprocessor.

 Digital Signal Processor
Basically, a DSPs is a high-speed single chip microprocessor or microcomputer designed to perform computer intensive digital signal processing tasks [9].
This means that typical computer such as an IBM PC design for business and other general application are not optimized to handle digital signal processing algorithms, such as digital filtering and fourier analysis.
The benefit of integrating two processors can lead to a more powerful computing system, which can execute signal processing tasks and any other computing task.

 Digital Signal Processor - Computerworld
A DSP differs markedly from the microprocessor that serves as the CPU in a desktop computer.
Basically, signal refers to communications—that is, a continuous stream of digital data that might not be stored (and thus might not be available in the future) and that must be processed in real time.
In addition, a DSP might use a Harvard architecture (maintaining completely physically separate memory spaces for data and instructions) so the chip's fetching and execution of program code doesn't interfere with its data processing operations.

A DIGITAL SIGNAL PROCESSOR BASED RF CONTROL SYSTEM FOR THE TRIUM
The use of a 24 bit DSP also gives a larger dynamic range when compared with an analog system, although now the dynamic range is determined by the ADC in the input and the DAC in the output.
There are several sources of error in digital control, such as quantization errors of either data or coefficients, round off errors, and overflow error.
With a 24 bit DSP and a 12 bit ADC, the ADC is a major contributor to quantization error.

Digital Signal Processor - Model 2060 - CANBERRA, An AREVA Group Company
The filtering, baseline restoration and optimization processes are then applied to the digitized data using real time digital processing algorithms.
Using high speed DSP circuits and sophisticated filtering algorithms, the 2060 replaces the traditional shaping Amplifier/ADC combination in traditional analog-based spectroscopy systems.
This reduces noise effects while making possible the use of more efficient and sophisticated filtering algorithms than can be achieved in the analog domain.
