Disk image - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Disk images are also routinely used in connection with software piracy, creating an image of a software package and subsequently distributing it.
A disk image is a computer file containing the complete contents and structure of a data storage device.
A common use of disk images is for remote distribution of software such as Linux distributions: installation floppy disks or CD-ROMs can be recorded as disk image files, transferred over the Internet, and the contents of the original disk(s) duplicated exactly by end users with their own floppy or CD-R drives.

External USB-based floppy disk drives are available for computers without floppy drives, and they work on any machine that supports USB.

 Atari Disk Image FAQ
Most disk images you find will be bootable, either to DOS or to the game or application software they contain.
A real Atari disk is a complex mess of adhesive magnetic stuff, made sense of by a dedicated floppy disk controller and then made useable by a computer in the disk drive.
An ATR disk image contains 16 bytes of data that identify it as an Atari disk image, and the remainder is every byte of useable data off the original diskette, stored in the original order it was stored on the disk.

 3.13. Disk Image Formats
Disk images are used in many places and for many purposes: emulation, CD/DVD mastering, backup, disk duplication, and software distribution.
Many image formats are just plain sector-by-sector copies of the disk's data, and disktype can handle them without any special precautions.
I was able to deduce the format of the static and dynamic images from examples.

Drive Image and Hard Disk Backup Software
A disk image file contains the exact, byte-by-byte copy of a hard drive, partition or logical disk and can be created with various compression levels on the fly without stopping Windows OS and therefore without interrupting your business.
Special bootable disks (either 2 floppy disks or one CD) can be created to restore data to the system partition.
Such scripts for creating an image file and appending data to an existing image file are created from the R-Drive Image interface the same way the actual action is performed.

 man: hdiutil
Originally, disk images were invented to electronically store and trans- mit representations of floppy disks for manufacturing replication.
NDIF (New Disk Image Format) images were developed to replace the Disk Copy 4.2 and DART image formats, as well as provide the ability to create images larger than a floppy disk.
Disk Copy 4.2 images were block for block representations of a floppy disk, with no notion of compression.

A disk image is a file which is an exact and complete image of a floppy disk.

So Classic on a disk image is only useful as long as all your Mac OS 9 apps actually work well in the Classic environment (most of them should do, anyway).
