Topic: Distributed Checksum Clearinghouse

 dcc.8
The Distributed Checksum Clearinghouse is based on an idea of Paul Vixie with code designed and written at Rhyolite Software starting in 2000.
The client identified by a client-ID might be a single computer with a single IP address, a single but multi-homed computer, or many computers.
It is possible and convenient for the DCC clients using a server on the same computer to use the same home directory as the server.

 Distributed Checksum Clearinghouses
The DCC was designed and written at Rhyolite Software starting in 2000.
See the DCC FAQ and the archive of the DCC mailing list for information about connections between the DCC and mail user agents and mail transfer agents.
A useful anti-spam scheme is more than just code, and that is particularly true of the DCC which becomes more effective as more mailboxes are protected by communicating DCC servers.

MSPAlliance - A Unified Voice For the Managed Services Industry
Distributed blacklists, such as those run by the Mail Abuse Prevention System (MAPS), operate at the network level.
These methods include domain level black- and whitelists, distributed blacklists, heuristics engines, statistical classification engines, distributed checksum clearinghouses, “honeypots,” peer-to-peer networks, and authenticated mail.
MX Logic’s Stacked Classification Framework is used as a part of its Spam Guard service as a coordinated arsenal of spam fighting technologies, incorporating five of the eight most common spam classification techniques: domain level black- and whitelists, distributed blacklists, a heuristics engine, Bayesian statistical classification, and a distributed checksum clearinghouse.

VITANIUM - Spam Filtering Service - The Process
In addition, VITANIUM uses many recognised RBL lists as well as a collaborative spam-tracking databases and Distributed Checksum Clearinghouses.
Further to the local and remote network tests, VITANIUM will analyse client based domain specific custom black and whitelists to finally determine whether a mail should be tagged as Spam.
By analysing header and text content, VITANIUM attempts to identify spammers tricks through local rule based heuristic tests and Bayesian learning.

It would be nice if Debian's spamassassin package included DCC.

Re: [Asrg] Going to Extremes to Fight Spam
I'm not saying blacklists and DCC are useless; just that they need to be used as part of a broad-spectrum approach.
Distributed checksum clearinghouses are easily fooled by small changes to messages.
You need textual analysis somewhere in the mix.

 Encyclopedia: SpamAssassin
Checksum is usually done when comparing directly *two files* for changes, like CRC / CRC32 checks or even MD5 et al is used for this purpose.
The introduction was a little wishy washy so I added direct and clear terms like Baysian filter, since that is what it uses apparently, and took out checksum.
I think checksum would be included in the Baysian filter term, if it belongs anywhere, since I think it the wrong term to begin with.
