DotGNU - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Currently, the main DotGNU software release is Portable.NET, an implementation of the Common Language Infrastructure that is able to compile and run.NET-compilable languages such as C# and VB.NET, among others, on numerous computing platforms.
DotGNU aims to be for webservices and for C# programs what GNU/Linux is rapidly becoming for desktop and server applications: the industry leader and provider of Free Software solutions.
The irc channel #dotgnu on irc.freenode.net is one of the main communication tools of the DotGNU project.

DotGNU, a Free Software Web services project that's a response to Microsoft's.NET, is hosting a 36-hour marathon IRC meet-a-thon this weekend aimed at interested developers and experienced contributors to hash over some issues.
DotGNU could be known as the Free Software.NET-like Project That Isn't Mono, but developers there say the less publicized project is making good progress, with a heavy-traffic email list as part of the evidence.
Gopal.V says the project has 20 to 30 core developers who are working on a variety of proposed Web services projects.

[PRC] GNU's answer to dot net - http://www.dotgnu.org
DotGNU, a project of GNU, is really a meta-project that will consist of a good number of such [30]software development projects.
This is an event to take stock of the last quarter for the DotGNU developers, and an excellent oppurtunity for newcomers to familiarize themselves with the project.
We're building something that could be called an "operating system for the internet" - a collection of tools that allow software components to interact with each other over the internet.

 Development Tools
DotGNU is the Free Software Foundation umbrella project for the.Net Framework.
As with DotGNU, although most of the current development in Mono seems to be tightly aligned with Microsoft's.Net for Windows, it has also branched development sub-projects like Gtk#, which is obviously heavily influenced by its ties with GNOME.
If you are a GNU purist you will surely be more interested in the DotGNU implementation, as it builds on other GNU projects.

 LWN: DotGNU Coding Competition
The DotGNU Project, which is part of the GNU project of the Free Software Foundation, is pleased to announce its first international Collaborative Coding Competition.
Furthermore, excluded from participation is everyone who has had access to proprietary source code of the Microsoft Windows system, or to source code for any proprietary implementation of System.Windows.Forms.
The participants in this competition will collaboratively complete the implementation of the System.Windows.Forms part of the C# class libraries for DotGNU Portable.NET, with the goal of duplicating the functionality of the proprietary library so that programs written against it can be run on Free Software.

Mono and dotGNU: what's the point? The Register
Mono and dotGNU are interesting projects for people who are interested in computer languages, compiler construction and other fairly esoteric, hard-core areas of software engineering.
Microsoft is working on adding edit-and-continue to VB.NET, generics to C#, embedding the CLR into the next version of SQL Server, and making a stack of improvements to managed C++.
Opinion Two open-source projects, Mono and dotGNU, are aimed at providing alternatives to Microsoft’s.NET framework and developer tools.

 PatentFUD - DotGNU Wiki
The concern that Microsoft might possibly be interested in enforcing patents against Free Software projects such as DotGNU or Mono is confirmed by statements which Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer made in March 2003 at CeBit, Germany's main IT exhibition.
This means that the worst that can happen to a developer working on these aspects of the DotGNU project is that the developer might be forced to accept a royalty-free patent license from Microsoft which prevents the developer from suing Microsoft for patent infringement.
The patent is relevant to the parts of.NET to which the DotGNU project is creating an alternative, Free Software implementation.
