Dumb terminal - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A dumb terminal in computing consists of a computer screen and keyboard, but practically no processing ability.
Basically, such smart terminals (often referred to as network computers or thin clients) are low-cost PC platforms with no external storage like hard disks or CD-ROM drives booting from a server in the network.
They have largely been superseded by personal computers.

 Terminals
Dumb terminals are popular in work environments where workers do not need access to graphical applications such as those provided by the X Window System.
Terminals provide a convenient and low-cost way to access your FreeBSD system when you are not at the computer's console or on a connected network.
Dumb terminals are specialized pieces of hardware that let you connect to computers over serial lines.

 A.P. Lawrence Linux/Unix Consultant: Terminals
Therefore, since both of these (the terminal and the computer) want to send characters on pin 2 and receive on pin 3 for (DB25 connections), it is necessary to use a null modem, or a crossed cable (at least 2 and 3 swapped) for the computer and the terminal to be able to communicate.
You generally can't print graphics through a terminal- often certain bytes won't be passed at all, and of course there's always the magic sequence that tells it to stop doing transparent print: that definitely can't be in the data.
But there are conditions where this will not work- for example, a terminal emulator running on a Windows machine can do local printing, but it usually will not work if the printer is a "Windows only" printer because of the way that the emulator sends the data.

 6. What are dumb terminals?
Dumb terminals are display and input devices which don't process data and input locally, instead transmitting input to a computer to which it is connected and displaying the resulting output.
This is not true, unlike dumb terminals which simply display the output of a program running on a server elsewhere on the network, Network Computers actually do local processing and are much closer to PCs than to dumb terminals.
Some Network Computers however do support protocols, such as X Window and ICA, which allow them to be used as dumb terminals to display the output of a program running on a server in additional to programs running locally, so that they are backwards compatible.

STI Computer Service Inc. - Centralized Computer with Dumb Terminals
Dumb terminals are attached to a centralized computer to allow multiple operators to work on the system at the same time (also known as multi-user, or multitasking).
However, a large and expensive centralized computer was needed to handle the dumb terminal requests for system resources (because the dumb terminals have limited memory and editing capabilities), and as additional terminals were added the speed of the system would degrade.
As system speed degrades with the addition of more dumb terminals, a larger, faster and more expensive centralized computer is required to maintain an acceptable terminal response time.

A terminal is a device that performs both input and output because it consists of a monitor (output), a keyboard (input), and a video card.
The dumb terminal is connected to a host computer.
The intelligent terminal on the other hand, in addition to the monitor and keyboard, also has a memory and processor that has the capability of performing some functions independent of the host computer.

The terminals are called "dumb" because they have very little processing power; nearly all of the computer "intelligence" resides on the mainframe.
That's where Esker's software comes in: It lets the Boundless machines "emulate," or pretend, to be dumb terminals so they hook up to mainframes as well as connect to the Net or local corporate servers.
The terminal emulation software will also run on the Model 300 when it ships later this year, featuring embedded Windows, a built-in Web browser, and Java support.

However, those keen to promote thin client computing argue that even if the initial outlay for dumb terminals is higher then the total cost of ownership (TCO) is lower as the machines see active service for longer than the average PC.
