Topic: Ebuild

Gentoo Linux Documentation -- The Ebuild Application
Using ebuild is more for development purposes; more information about ebuild can therefore be found in the Developers Handbook.
Whenever you invoke ebuild against a given ebuild file, it will verify if the checksums of all involved files are equal to those given in the accompanying Manifest or files/digest-- file.
You are advised to edit the ebuild's src_compile() function if you want to change the compilation instructions.

Gentoo Linux Documentation -- Ebuild HOWTO
Before writing a new ebuild, check bugs.gentoo.org to see if an ebuild has already been written for the package, but has not yet been added to the Portage tree.
Initial releases of ebuilds must have no revision number; e.g., package-4.5.3 and are considered by Portage to have a revision number of zero.
There are a number of different functions that you can define in ebuild files that control the building and installation process of your package.

HOWTO Create an Updated Ebuild - Gentoo Linux Wiki
Apply this to other ebuilds, and you will have the most positively up-to-date system possible.
In this particular version (2.0.8) of xchat however, there was a security hole that the ebuild patched, and in 2.0.9 it was fixed by the developers.
An "overlay" is a directory where you can put your own ebuilds, and they will be treated as if they were in the actual portage tree - as if you got them from emerge sync.

 Gentoo Linux
Ebuild scripts for a particular piece of software will live in its own directory.
Reasons the particular packages should not be installed are sometimes documented in this file, so if any package matches the version string listed in the file, it will fail with the above error.
All versions of this software will have a unique ebuild file within this directory.

 ebuild (Linux Reviews)
If for some reason the current or just-downloaded sources' md5 digests don't match those recorded in files/digest-[package]-[version-rev], a warning is printed and ebuild exits with an error code of 1.
At the moment, the ebuild's dependency information is not incorporated into the RPM.
Commands exist to fetch sources, unpack sources, compile sources, install object files into a temporary directory "image", merge the image to the local filesystem, create a bzipped tarball package out of the image, and more.

In addition, the production ebuild system has several other global configuration options, allowing the user to specify options such as what optimization flags to use during compilation, and whether optional support for packages like GNOME and slang should be enabled by default in those packages that support it.
This way, we can upgrade or enhance the ebuild system simply by editing the "ebuild" script, keeping the implementation details outside of the ebuild files.
Bash is an essential component of the Gentoo Linux ebuild system.

Once you've successfully tested your ebuild, you can request that we add it to Portage by opening a bug in our bugs database.
If you're going to the trouble of writing an ebuild so that you can take advantage of Gentoo's support for installing web-based packages, it makes sense to verify that your ebuild works the way we want all these ebuilds in Portage to behave.
Here is the minimal level of testing that we perform on ebuilds for web-based packages.
