 MICROCONTROLLERS AND EMBEDDED PROCESSORS
Embedded processors and microcontrollers are used extensively in robotics.
The x86 processor in this machine can't really be considered an embedded controller, since the machine is typically used for general purpose computing.
However, where a microcontroller [almost by definition] is a computer on a chip, an embedded controller might need external components before it is considered a "computer." This is especially true regarding RAM.

 CNN.com - Technology - Embedded processors head for the desktop - October 10, 2000
Embedded processor development usually requires the creation of an emulator in which the code is run, with output displayed in the development environment or on a logic probe.
In the embedded environment, the user never sees the code and there is, at most, a minimal user interface.
For Apple and other computer manufacturers, the convergence of embedded and desktop processors could lead to a greater selection of chips.

 Software-Based Self-Testing of Embedded Processors
Embedded processor testing techniques based on the execution of self-test programs have been recently proposed as an effective alternative to classic external tester-based testing and pure hardware built-in self-test (BIST) approaches.
In this paper, we first present a high-level, functional component-oriented, software-based self-testing methodology for embedded processors.
Finally, we demonstrate the effectiveness and efficiency of the proposed methodology by completely applying it on two different processor implementations of a popular RISC instruction set architecture including several gate-level implementations.

Electronic News: Intel's Embedded Processors Push : Plan to have Pentiums in everything from industrial control to STBs ...
Intel said it will not support every Pentium design on the embedded side but it will use most of the processors because of the already huge installed base of processors and the software that has been developed to work around those processors.
One of the more interesting aspects of Intel moving heavily into this area is the need for an infrastructure to be developed to handle these new emerging embedded applications.
By using that same roadmap, Intel's embedded division hopes to avoid that situation and still capture those design wins.
