Encapsulated PostScript - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
This has become possible with the increased processing power of modern computers; when EPS was first designed this would have either have been beyond the abilities of the typical computer, or too slow to have been acceptable.
By placing the PostScript in the data fork and a standard Mac PICT resource in the resource fork, both images could be moved about together invisibily as if they were one file.
Both of these PC format EPS files have a particular disadvantage: because the PostScript data, header and preview are all in the same file, they will cause printing errors if a program does not understand the format well enough to extract only the PostScript data.

postscript - encyclopedia article about postscript.
Prior to the introduction of PostScript, printers were designed to print character output given the text—typically in ASCII—as input.
It prints PostScript documents on non-PostScript printers using the CPU of the host computer to do the rasterization, sending the result as a single large bitmap to the printer.
Typically, PostScript programs are not produced by humans, but by other programs.

 What is Encapsulated PostScript?
Encapsulated PostScript (EPS) is a standard format for importing and exporting PostScript language files in all environments.
A variation of EPS embeds the preview image and PostScript text in a binary file which contains a header and the preview image in either a TIFF or MetaFile format.
The purpose of the EPS file is to be included as an illustration in other PostScript language page descriptions.

Adobe Encapsulated PostScript files are files which are intended to be encapsulated (or incorporated) into other Adobe PostScript files.

EPS and its requirements on a PostScript file are described in considerable detail in Appendix H of the second edition of the PostScript language reference manual, a.k.a.

The PostScript data format was originally designed to store information relating to the positioning and proportioning of image data for printers, not computer displays.
Adobe's EPS (Encapsulated PostScript) file format is substantially different in nature from DaVinci's other supported file formats.
When importing EPS files, DaVinci uses a Windows metafile (.WMF) to display the PostScript data onscreen, but it does not directly interpret all the EPS data in the file.

 EPSF - Encapsulated PostScript Files
Encapsulated PostScript files are special PostScript programs with a special header describing the width and height of the image and how to place the image on the page.
A 24 byte binary header describes the offset and size of the PostScript program and the type of preview image and it's offset and size.
This header allows other applications to blindly include the image, and rotate, scale, place the image in the correct position of the application's document for printing or displaying on postscript device.

 About PostScript errors
Can be caused by a misguided attempt to change PostScript files; some programs may have an error that allows a scale factor of 0% to be used.
In PostScript level 1 there is a fixed limit; in level 2 the limit is much higher.
A particularly unpleasant source of problems is bugs, either in the programs that write the PostScript, or in a few cases in the PostScript interpreter itself.

An EPS file is a PostScript file which follows the DSC and which follows a couple of other rules.
Encapsulated PostScript (EPS) is that part of Adobe's Document Structuring Convention that provides this information.
If you are writing a PostScript printer driver or other utility which will be used by a large number of people to create or manipulate PostScript documents, do not even think about writing it without making it DSC-compliant.

Encapsulated postscript (*.eps) files, previews, and Microsoft Word
As of IDL 5.2, encapsulated postscript files can be output with previews in both the EPSI and EPSF standardized formats.
The other preview form is known as EPSF (PREVIEW=2), which is a 30 byte (binary) header on the front of the ASCII EPS which points to the EPS and to an additional preview representation.
One caveat, however, is that an EPSF file is not entirely ASCII, so it cannot be sent directly to a Postscript printer (unlike the EPSI format).

OSU Physics Faq's: How do I figure out the bounding box (BoundingBox) for an encapsulated postscript file?
By convention, the first line of a PostScript file specifies the type of PostScript and is then followed by a series of comments called the header or preamble.
Since these methods do not check for illegal PostScript operators, they do not produce usable EPS files unless the PS files are free of forbidden operators.
The most convenient option is to use the ps2epsi utility distributed with Ghostscript (see Section 5), which reads the PostScript file, calculates the BoundingBox parameters, and creates an eps file (complete with a BoundingBox) which contains the PostScript graphics.

With Adobe® Systems' introduction of the PostScript® page-description language computers could display fonts and images using point-to-point math rather than by pixels alone.
If the graphics application you are using cannot read native vector files the next best thing would be to save them as EPS (Encapsulated PostScript) files.

It turns out there is actually no need to decompress, since PostScript level 2 and higher can decompress JPEG internally - thus it is possible to “wrap” the compressed JPEG data in some PostScript to make a valid EPS file which is only about 25% bigger than the original JPEG.
The EPS files can only be opened/printed on devices which understand level 2 PostScript or better (that’s just about everything these days).

 MathML Conference 2002: Presentations
As an example, when rendering to PostScript it is not necessary to keep track of the selected state of a given MathML element, since no selection is possible at all.
The rendering level was initially designed as described above: in the GTK context, the rendering device class was such that the invoked drawing primitives were forwarded to the GTK layer and then, ultimately, to the graphic hardware.
The publisher adopted our standalone formatting engine to render every MathML fragment to encapsulated PostScript, each PostScript file was then converted to a GIF image, to be eventually referenced from the final HTML document.
