Jordan's China Handbook: The Chinese Language(s)
The Unicode Consortium, keeper of the new international standard for computer representation of scripts in all languages, defined 20,901 characters in version 2.1, and promptly enlarged the total character set for "CJK" (Chinese, Japanese, and Korean) to 27,482 in version 3, published in 2000.
Since Chinese tend to name languages after places, and since English tends to use the same names for languages and the people who speak them, it is useful at this point to include a few additional terms you will find in the anthropological literature referring to regional variants of Chinese language or culture.
It is, of course, almost as foreign to speakers of Non-Mandarin variants of Chinese as the old literary standard was, for the languages of China vary not only in pronunciation, but in vocabulary and word order (a fact rarely appreciated by northern Chinese or by Chinese who have been the victims of school system propaganda).

 Simple English Wikipedia - Consumerium
This is not possible of course if these terms are not even defined in Simple English, so, there will remain terms that by editorial policy are required to be part of Consumerium but which are subject to arbitrary out-of-process deletion at SEW or indeed any Wikimedia project ruled by their GodKing.
However in its present form the project cannot possibly serve that purpose, as it uses too poor a vocabulary and has no mission to be comprehensible or apply any clear standard or defining vocabulary discipline.
In the meantime, to submit any serious glossary or Simple English material directly to the SEW is to make it possibly unavailable in future, as with social network, contact network, power network, etc., which are rather essential terms for discussing any power structure rationally.

 Marjorie Chan's ChinaLinks 3
The current version of the Unicode standard is 4.0.1, with 4.0 the major revision since version 3.2.
(The earlier 3.2 version had a total of 95,156 encoded characters, with the primary feature of Unicode 3.2 being that of 1,016 new encoded characters added to the earlier Unicode 3.1 standard, which had 94,140 enoded characters, having doubled in size from a total of 49,194 encoded characters in Unicode 3.0.
The version for Windows NT 4.0, Windows 2000 (and maybe Windows Me also?) can display/access all letters, symbols, *and* double-byte CJK characters in a font.

 Yale Romanization
Rather than try to teach recruits to interpret the linguistically accurate but somewhat counter-intuitive standard Romanization of the time, the Wade-Giles system, a new system was invented that utilized the decoding skills that recruits would already know from having learned to read English.
The pinyin version, "Ribenren de jiguanqiang zai nei bian?" wouldn't be too bad if the soldier could pronounce qiang.
Because of this and other factors, Yale romanization is usually held to be easy for American English speakers to pronounce without much training.

 Bible Translations Into English
The English Standard Version uses archaic constructions to produce a text that sounds more literal than it really is. For example, Hosea 9:1 in the English Standard Version reads, “Rejoice not, O Israel” where the equally conservative Holman Christian Standard Bible reads, “Israel, do not rejoice.” The translations are equally literal.
The word “standard” in the name of a Bible translation does not mean that the translation passed the scrutiny of some sort of Underwriters Laboratories for Bible translations, or that they are better or worse than translations without the word “standard” in their names.
While I am all in favor of the English translation being as gender-inclusive as the Greek (for instance, the most accurate translation of αδελφοι is ‘brothers and sisters’), most ‘inclusive-language’ versions go too far, changing gender-specific Greek words into generic or plural English words, which changes the meanings of passages such as Hebrews 2.

The Standard English Version (SEV) is an ongoing project that will translate all the chapters of the Quran in standard English consistent with the New Revised Standard Version translation of the Hebrew Bible, Apocrypha, and New Testament.
The Standard English Version does not attempt a literal translation because of the dissimilarities of classic Arabic and modern standard, though not Anglicized, English.
The goal is to achieve a measure of consistency throughout all four texts, and produce a version of the Quran that English readers will not only enjoy, but will return to for both public reading and personal study.

After this, permission was sought and granted from the National Council of Churches to use the 1971 revision of the RSV as the English textual basis for the ESV.
Since its release the English Standard Version has been well-received by both individual Christians and churches in the English-speaking world, especially among evangelicals.
According to its translators, the ESV stands in the Tyndale-King James tradition of Bible translations (examples of other translations that stand in this stream are the Revised Version [1885], the American Standard Version [1901], the Revised Standard Version [1952, 1971], and the New King James Version [1982]).

Since its release, the English Standard Version has been well-received by both individual Christians and churches in the English-speaking world, especially among evangelicals.
First and foremost, the ESV is an update of the Revised Standard Version (RSV) of 1971 that aims to replace the interpretations in the RSV which Christian conservatives have viewed as being theologically liberal, improve the accuracy, and somewhat update the language.
According to its translators, the ESV stands in the Tyndale-King James tradition of Bible translations [examples of other translations that stand in this stream are the Revised Version (1885), the American Standard Version (1901), the Revised Standard Version (1952, 1971), and the New King James Version (1983)].

 English Standard Version
The English Standard Version (ESV) stands in the classic mainstream of English Bible translations of the past half-millennium.
The fountainhead of that stream was William Tyndale’s New Testament of 1526; marking its course were the King James Version of 1611 (KJV), the Revised Version of 1885 (RV), the American Standard Version of 1901 (ASV), and the Revised Standard Version of 1952 and 1971 (RSV).
But throughout, our goal has been to retain the depth of meaning and enduring language that have made their indelible mark on the English-speaking world and have defined the life and doctrine of the church over the last four centuries.
