Ferranti - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Ferranti is also famous in the computer industry for building the second commercial computer, the Ferranti Mark I, which went on sale in 1949 and started their computer business which lasted into the 1970s.
In the late 1940s Ferranti joined with various university-based research groups to develop computers.
By this time Ferranti's own computer division had been merged into International Computers and Tabulators (ICT) in 1963.

Ferranti Mark I - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Ferranti Mark I was the second commercially available general-purpose computer (the first one being the German Z4), with the first machine delivered in February 1951, just beating the UNIVAC I.
The Manchester Mark I effectively served as a prototype for the Ferranti Mark I; the main improvements over it were in the size of the primary storage and secondary storage, a faster multiplier, and additional instructions.
The revisions mainly cleaned up the instruction set for better usability.

 FP-6000 -- From DATAR To The FP-6000
Ferranti Canada's design approach was to make all aspects of the computer cheque sorting system modular, in order that customers could expand the capacity of their sorting systems in an economical and flexible manner.
Ferranti Canada's efforts to launch an indigenous computer industry, with itself at the centre, and the eventual collapse of this dream, is a more complex story than the usual versions which speak of great ideas lost to an unresponsive society.
The computer group at Ferranti Canada approached ICT with a proposal to design and manufacture ICT's proposed 1905 and 1906 computers in Canada (the FP-6000 itself became the 1904).

 Ferranti Mark 1
The Ferranti Mark 1 was the world's first commercially available general-purpose computer.
This was important because it established a link between the university and industry, and ensured that the power of the electronic computer would be available as quickly as possible around the U.K (and abroad).
When the first machine was delivered to the University only a quarter of the 16,000 word capacity was in commission, but this was increased as time progressed.

 The Encyclopedia of Computer Languages
One of these was an analysis of a market survey for household trays in which interviews were conducted with some 1,100 households, covering 17 general questions and 10 observations of each tray found at the house: these questionnaires were analysed and 17 tables for the internal report were printed direct from the computer output tape.

 History Ferranti
Ferranti's were a long established family business (started 1882) involved in large transformers, domestic appliances, etc. After the 1939-45 war, Sir Vincent de Ferranti encouraged the company to get into new technologies which led to the collaboration with Manchester University in the area of digital computers.
Over the period 1951 to 1959, Ferranti had about 25% of the UK computer market at the top end of systems delivered.
In 1963, Ferranti sold its mainframe computer business to ICT for £1.5M in cash and 1.9 million ordinary shares which gave Ferranti a 10.6% stake in ICT.

This article examines the role of Ferranti Ltd. in the developing computer industry in the Manchester area.
It looks at the performance of the Ferranti firm once it entered into computer manufacturing, tries to determine where it went wrong and why, and briefly compares the firm with others attempting to enter the field at the same time.

Encyclopedia4U - History of computing - Encyclopedia Article
This University machine became the prototype for the Ferranti Mark I, the world's first commercially available computer (although some point out that LEO I was the computer that was used for the world's first regular routine office computer job in November 1951).
The first working von Neumann machine was the Manchester "Baby", built at the University of Manchester in 1948; it was followed in 1949 by the Manchester Mark I computer which functioned as a complete system using the Williams tube for memory.
The first model was delivered to the University in February, 1951 and at least nine others were sold between 1951 and 1957.

 Ferranti Air Systems Ltd
Ferranti remains independent of hardware vendors and has led the market in commitment to Open Systems technology for aviation to provide the best of breed systems which customers can build upon and configure according to their specific needs.
The company, now part of Datel Ferranti Group plc, continues to provide high performance, operationally critical, computer based information management systems to an impressive list of international customers.
Over its 25 year history, Ferranti Air Systems Ltd has established a reputation for successfully implementing computer based solutions for the air transport industry.

 Manchester Mark 1
There was a dual interest, firstly in creating an effective prototype for Ferranti to base their machine on, and secondly in making a computer available for Ferranti and for research in the University, thereby gaining experience in how it could be used in practice.
It was quickly decided to press ahead to develop a realistic useable computer based on the same principles.
This Intermediary Version was available for general use by other university departments and Ferranti.

50th Anniversary of the Manchester Baby computer
It in turn was the basis of the first commercially available computer, the Ferranti Mark 1, the first machine off the production line being delivered in February 1951.
With the integration of a high speed magnetic drum by the Autumn (the ancestor of today's disc) this was the first machine with a fast electronic and magnetic two-level store.
These pages tell the story of the Baby and the Mark 1, and give a record of the 50th anniversary celebrations for the Mark 1, and the machines that followed it.

Vintage Radio Repair and Restoration - Ferranti
The sound quality is nothing special, and the receiver I repaired was particularly susceptible to external interference - the computer in the next room, which caused a bit of background noise on other sets, completely blotted out some stations on this one.
Ferranti produced a number of very similar sets, such as the 115 and the 125, which have similar circuit arrangements and cabinet designs.
This was one of the last sets produced by Ferranti before they were taken over by Ekco.

 An Industry at Risk
A recent example is Stac Electronics, a small company making data compression software, who apparently bought a software patent from Ferranti in England so that they could prevent Microsoft from including a data compression feature "Doublespace" in MSDOS V6.0.
This lawsuit was launched over a year ago, is still going, and has cost both sides huge amounts of money.
Big companies will also experience difficulties with small companies that decide to use broad, but trivial, patents to defend market niches against legitimate competitors.

 Ferranti’s Deptford Power Station
Ferranti didn't hesitate to use the gas industry's example in support of his own vision.
Soon Deptford was to see the start of another development, which would make possible so many of the technological achievements of the 20th Cen-tury through the large-scale generation of electricity and its high voltage transmission over great distances inaugurated in the Deptford power station scheme.
The system was converted to run 'in parallel' instead of 'in series'; switchgear of his own design was erected, and soon the Sie-mens machines were replaced by Ferranti alternators.

 ETUDE - August 1942
The rendition of his original works requires technic of the highest order as all of these were composed for use in his recitals.
He has surpassed all his celebrated rivals in vanquishing the difficulties which this instrument in the hands of others offers.
The guitar alone has been the attraction of this soiree, but the genius of Ferranti is so supple, so extended and so varied that one did not have a suspicion of monotony.

Ferranti were notable for producing pretty much all their own components for their receivers.
The nature of the waxed cardboard packaged electrolytics is that if they are not used (charged/discharged etc) reasonably shortly after manufacture, they can need "re-forming" again, and the application of mains voltage did not give time for that process to occur.

Summing up his 10-day trip, de Ferranti say he's impressed with the results of the projects, especially with the high degree of community participation.
In the southern state of Paraná, where the Bank is financing the Paraná Rural Poverty Alleviation and Natural Resources Management Project, de Ferranti visited the municipality of Campo Mourão, where an attempt is being made to address in an integrated way two of the state's major problems in rural areas—poverty and natural resources degradation.
There too, de Ferranti met with members of the community and saw the results of their work so far, as they have begun to produce honey, juices and sweets from regional fruits, and fish.
