FidoNet - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
FidoNet was non-commercial, and mostly popular amongst hobbyist computer users, many of them hackers and radio amateurs, before the Internet became accessible and inexpensive.
Over time, other BBS software was independently adapted to support the relevant FidoNet protocols, and the network became a popular means for hobbyist computer users to communicate.
If the mailer answered the phone and a human caller was detected rather than other mailer software, the mailer would exit, and pass control to the BBS software, which would then initialise for interaction with the user.

 A FidoNet Primer
FidoNet nodes are often personal computers in somebody's basement; the system operator (sysop) may be a young child or a retired grandfather.
FidoNet has inspired other networks using similar software; these are often referred to as Fido Technology Networks (FTN).
Now, of course, it is adapting to the new technologies and many FidoNet systems are also web servers, news servers, and generally accessible over the Internet in one way or another.

FidoNet'S PURPOSE: Very simple; it is a hobby, a non-commercial network of computer hobbiests ("hackers", in the older, original meaning) who want to play with, and find uses for, packet switch networking.
FidoNet is no longer just a piece of software; it has become complex organism.
FidoNet today is a network quickly approaching the levels of complexity of commercial networks, and has many more capabilities than many "mini" networks, such as USENET, which has no routing or hosts.

 Steve Mariner's Fidonet Page
FidoNet is an ameteur hobby network, where each computer on the network is a computer Bulletin Board System (BBS), and they share one facet in common: They all have a piece of software which knows how to use the FidoNet technology protocol in order to send mail and files back and forth.
The first software to perform this task was written by the founder of FidoNet, Tom Jennings.
This amazing piece of software was called Fido, and it grew from a network of a few friends into a worldwide network of over 14,000 BBSs in a matter of 10 years.

Bulletin Board Systems & FidoNet History
FidoNet's packet-based, store-and-forward technology worked as well as it did on the Internet, and FidoNet's rapid growth paralleled the growth of the Usenet and BITNET.
Bulletin Board Systems (BBS) and FidoNet in particular were based on widely available personal computers, and so spread rapidly.
The first bulletin board system was called the Computerized Bulletin Board System (CBBS), and was developed in February, 1978, with software development by Ward Christianson (previously developer of the XMODEM file transfer protocol), and hardware configuration by Randy Suess.

Contributions are submitted to node 1:1/1; a file describing the format to be used is available from 1:1/1 and many other systems.
Private listings which are for the convenience of one sysop (at the expense of every other sysop in FidoNet) are a luxury which is no longer possible.
This overview provides a summary of the structure; specific duties of the coordinator positions are given later in the document.

A FidoNet implementation must route messages which do not have files attached through net hosts as shown in a FidoNet format nodelist.
As the TeLink protocol relies on a modification to the XMODEM file transfer protocol, it is documented at the data link layer level.
As this is a data structure which is actually transferred, its definition is critical to FidoNet.

Common sense is that Fidonet systems should be able to exchange mail directly.
In order to make this possible, they should support some protocol which will be the least common denominator for a given transport.
In other words, hosts in the fidonet.org domains are Fidonet-Internet gateways that are supposed to accept mail by both SMTP and FTS-1 (or, better EMSI) protocols.

FidoNet is, or was an amateur network of computer users connected via the public telephone network (PSTN) with direct dialup between nodes, or addresses on the network (including nodes overseas).
This could sometimes result in problems for callers, as there was no such thing as the same "look and feel" which is so much a part now of what the average user expects online, or from applications on his or her home computer!

Jennings, at the age of 40, has already invented the technology for the garage-band version of the Internet, FidoNet, which in scope, if not media sexiness, rivals the Net itself.
And he's already figured out how to turn sound business practice and Constellation-class technical chops into profit with TLG - simultaneously being a trust-busting populist who, in true Net style, has treated big-business mercantilist bad behavior as a network fault to be routed around.
With a character like Jennings, however, you have to figure the probability for an uncomplicated retreat into the rentier class is low.
