Topic: File format

File format - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A file format is a particular way to encode information for storage in a computer file.
Many file formats, including some of the most well-known file formats, have a published specification document (often with a reference implementation) that describes exactly how the data is to be encoded, and which can be used to determine whether or not a particular program treats a particular file format correctly.
Other file formats, however, are designed for storage of several different types of data: the GIF format supports storage of both still images and simple animations, and the QuickTime format can act as a container for many different types of multimedia.

Apache Lucene - Index File Formats
In particular, it is the difference between the position of this term's data in that file and the position of the previous term's data (or zero, for the first term in the file).
When a file named "commit.lock" is present, a process is currently re-writing the "segments" file and deleting outdated segment index files, or a process is reading the "segments" file and opening the files of the segments it names.
The remaining files are all per-segment, and are thus defined by suffix.

Wave File Format - The Sonic Spot
The first 8 bytes in the file is a standard RIFF chunk header which has a chunk ID of "RIFF" and a chunk size equal to the file size minus the 8 bytes used by the header.
Since the Wave file format is native to Windows and therefor Intel processors, all data values are stored in Little-Endian (least significant byte first) order.
Wave files use the standard RIFF structure which groups the files contents (sample format, digital audio samples, etc.) into separate chunks, each containing it's own header and data bytes.

 PLY - Polygon File Format
Following the start of the header is the keyword "format" and a specification of either ASCII or binary format, followed by a version number.
This document presents the PLY polygon file format, a format for storing graphical objects that are described as a collection of polygons.
The PLY format is NOT intended to be a general scene description language, a shading language or a catch-all modeling format.

Thinking XML: The open office file format
Information on how OpenOffice uses XML, including the file formats, can be found at the XML project page which links to details and DTDs of the file formats, a discussion of the choices behind the package formats, and more.
Unfortunately, this file is a bit too cluttered with elements for casual viewing in a text editor, but you can extract the character data using many common XML tools, including XSLT, courtesy of the null style sheet (see Listing 2).
Be warned that to process these files with general XML tools, you either have to use a catalog for resolving the public ID, copy the Manifest.dtd file specified as the system ID to the same directory, or just use tools that do not read the external DTD subset.

This format uses Microsoft's version of the Electronic Arts Interchange File Format method for storing data in "chunks".

 TIFF File Format FAQ
Many image file formats have an image header with fixed fields containing information such as image dimensions, color space specification, etc. The TIFF file format is different in that it allows for a flexible set of information fields.
The BigTIFF file format is an ongoing attempt to design a next version of TIFF, specifically targeted at breaking the 4 gigabyte boundary.
One final important difference between TIFF and most other image file formats is that TIFF defines support for multiple images in a single file.
