SSH file transfer protocol - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In computing, the SSH File Transfer Protocol or SFTP is a network protocol that provides file transfer and manipulation functionality over any reliable data stream.
SFTP is most often used as subsystem of SSH protocol version 2 implementations, having been designed by the same working group.
Many Microsoft Windows-based SFTP implementations use version 4 of the protocol, which lessened its ties with the Unix platform.

 RFC 959 (rfc959) - File Transfer Protocol
The transfer byte size is not necessarily the byte size in which data is to be stored in a system, nor the logical byte size for interpretation of the structure of the data.
For files sent with record or page structure a maximum record or page size (in logical bytes) might also be necessary; this is indicated by a decimal integer in a second argument field of RFC 959 October 1985 File Transfer Protocol the command.
The File Transfer Protocol was now defined as a protocol for file transfer between HOSTs on the ARPANET, with the primary function of FTP defined as transfering files efficiently and reliably among hosts and allowing the convenient use of remote file storage capabilities.
