Filename extension - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A filename extension is an extra set of (usually) alphanumeric characters that is appended to the end of a filename to allow computer users (as well as various pieces of software on the computer system) to quickly determine the type of data stored in the file.
Filename extensions can be considered as a type of metadata, though one of the most visible pieces of such information on modern computer systems.
This is different from Unix operating sysems, where file name extensions are voluntary for executables, and instead permissions are used to decide whether a file is executable.

This particular extension is used heavily on C64 or C128 computers, so there is a high probability that files with it were intended for such a machine.

Secunia - Advisories - Opera Long Filename Extension Buffer Overflows
Both vulnerabilities are caused due to boundary errors in the handling of filename extensions and can be exploited by a malicious person by constructing a special HTML document, which will make the browser try to download a file with a long filename extension.
The first vulnerability will automatically cause a heap overflow overwriting arbitrary content with the user input converted to 16-bit wide chars.
Two vulnerabilities have been discovered in the Opera browser, which can be exploited by a malicious person to cause a DoS (Denial of Service) on a user's browser.

 Saugus.net: extension
Filename extensions originate back in the days of CP/M and basically allow a very rough grouping of different file types by putting a tag at the end of the name.
While extensions are semi-enforced on CP/M, MS-DOS, and MS-Windows, they have no real meaning aside from convention on other platforms and are only optional.
To further complicate matters, the tag is sometimes separated by the name proper by a period "." and sometimes by a tab.
