Film - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Generating such a film is very labour intensive and tedious, though the development of computer animation has greatly sped up the process.
These machines were outgrowths of simple optical devices (such as magic lanterns), and would display sequences of still pictures at sufficient speed for the images on the pictures to appear to be moving, a phenomenon called persistence of vision.
Film preservation of decaying film stock is a matter of concern to both film historians and archivists, and to companies interested in preserving their existing products in order to make them available to future generations (and thereby increase revenue).

Film speed can be an important aspect in determining the amount of radiation exposure received by a patient.
The greater the film speed, the lesser the exposure received by the patient.
Switching from E to F speed produced a 20-25% reduction in exposure, and switching from D to F-speed film produced a 60% reduction in exposure.

As the film moves through the projector from the film spool, through the gate and onto the rear take up reel, it advances single frame by single frame irrespective of motor speed.
The Eumig 610D is a variable speed projector which uses the film advancement system to control film speed, rather than varying the speed of the motor.
The first (immediately below the gate) permits the film to negotiate a 90 degree turn towards the rear of the projector, the second, maintains tension as the film is wound onto the reel.

35mm Fuji and Kodak Camera Film
The speed of a roll of film is measured according to an International Standards Organization (ISO) scale, with the most common varieties being ISO 100, 200, 400 and 800.
These numbers are referred to as the film's "speed" because each level is twice as sensitive to light as the last and will expose more quickly, allowing a faster shutter speed to be used.
For example, the Nikon D1X will let you set the "film speed" between ISO 125 and ISO 800 so that the camera's sensitivity to light and light meter will behave as if it were loaded with the selected speed of film.

photo.net Forum: What is "true" ISO rating?
The ISO speed is the speed at which a film should be exposed so that certain tonal values in the subject are recorded as a specific density on the film while maintaining a certain, limited contrast index for the film.
Film speed, grain, and contrast are the choice of the photographer.
When, on the camera, you set a different speed than the ISO speed, you are changing the Exposure Index for the film (and presumably compensating for that change by altering development).

 Determining Film Speed
Finding your individual film speed (often called "exposure index" or EI) for a film-developer combination is a little like finding the "home" key on a typewriter, or "middle C" on a piano.
If further adjustment is needed, you may either repeat the process with a new estimated film speed, or estimate how much you would have to change your estimated film speed to give the fourth (Zone I) frame a density of 0.1.
To determine one's own film speed rating for any film-development combination, it is necessary only to...

Push processing - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Push processing is the opposite of pull processing, which is a similar technique designed to effectively decrease the speed of the processed film.
Push processing is a term from photography, referring to a film development technique that increases the speed of the film being processed.
By push processing film, a higher film speed than the manufacturer's indication can be achieved, allowing the film to be used under lighting conditions that would ordinarily be too low for good exposures.

 Super-8 & 16mm Filmmaking Sync Sound FAQ
In the early days of double-system sound recording, both the motion picture camera and the magnetic film recorder (see "What is a magnetic film recorder") were driven by "synchronous" AC motors.
Magnetic film recorders or mag film recorders (or fullcoat recorders) are basically audio tape recorders that record on sprocketed magnetic film.
If the film project is to be edited as a film (as opposed to being transferred to and edited on video), the field audio tapes will need to be resolved to magnetic film.

 PhotoNotes.org Dictionary - Film speed
This is because the speed at which film emulsion reacts to light is related to the physical size of the silver halide grains in the film.
There are a number of different historical standards for film speed, but the universal one in use today is the ISO film standard, which derives from the older ASA film standard.
The term “speed” refers to the speed at which the film emulsion reacts to the presence of light.

Film speed - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In the ISO linear scale, which corresponds to the older ASA scale, doubling the speed of a film (that is, halving the amount of light that is necessary to expose the film) implies doubling the numeric value that designates the film speed.
Film speed is found by referencing the Hurter and Driffield curve for the film.
In the ISO logarithmic scale, which corresponds to the older DIN scale, doubling the speed of a film implies adding 3° to the numeric value that designates the film speed.

 Personal reference speed
First, the horizontal location of the film curve family in the graph space is determined by two factors: the speed of the film and the amount of exposure your test provided.
In figure 1 the reference speed point has been disabled and the Plotter (in the absence of a reference) has assumed that this 100 speed film (Agfa APX 100 in D-76 1+1) is accurately rated.
For example, if we’re testing an ISO 400-speed film and its family appears 2/3 stop to the right of the “ideal” family location, we know that the real speed is 250, not the 400 claimed.

 BECOME A PROFESSIONAL PHOTOGRAPHER
i recently pushed a film when photographing greyhound racing, i had provia 400 with me but the low light gave me too slow a shutter speed so i pushed it 1 stop to iso800 and then later in the night when the lights came on i pushed another roll 2 stops to iso 1600,
It was standard procedure for us to push process Fujichrome 100 (RDP, NOT Provia or Sensia) two stops to E.I. 400 instead of using 400 speed slide film, and pushing 400 to 1600 instead of using 1600 speed slide film.
Ok..for all those new to photography PUSH PROCESSING, is when you have a film that is too slow for the shots you wish to take, so what you do is underexpose the film by 1 or 2 stops and then ask your processer to extend the developing time to correct the under exposure.

Film is unwound from the center of the platter through a mechanism called a "brain" which controls the speed of the platter's rotation so it matches the speed of the film as it is fed to the projector.
