FireWire - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
FireWire was developed by Apple Computer in the 1990s, after work defining a slower version of the interface by the IEEE 1394 working committee in the 1980s.
FireWire, with the help of software, is well-suited for creating ad-hoc (terminals only, no routers) computer networks.
FireWire (also known as i.Link or IEEE 1394) is a personal computer (and digital audio/video) serial bus interface standard, offering high-speed communications and isochronous real-time data services.

21st-Why FireWire is Hot! Hot! Hot!
With FireWire, the link from the DVC camcorder into the computer is direct.
Hopefully, FireWire's acceptance also means the end of some truly brain dead consumer electronics interfaces, like the ubiquitous Toslink found on many laser discs and CD players; as well as a hopeful farewell to SP/DIF (Sony/Philips Data Interface).
So computer designers using FireWire are probably be wise to modify their PCI connections accordingly.

 FireWire - a Whatis.com definition
FireWire is Apple Computer's version of a standard, IEEE 1394, High Performance Serial Bus, for connecting devices to your personal computer.
FireWire can work with the latest internal computer bus standard, Peripheral Component Interconnect (PCI), but higher data transfer rates may require special design considerations to minimize undesired buffering for transfer rate mismatches.
Because IEEE 1394 is a peer-to-peer interface, one camcorder can dub to another without being plugged into a computer.

 Firewire IEEE1394 iLink
FireWire and USB are both widely used in the computer and consumer electronics industries.
FireWire, IEEE-1394 or iLINK are all different names for the same high-speed digital technology that enables consumer electronics to easily interface with computer products.
Firewire originally was developed by Apple Computer, Inc. as a high speed serial bus.

FireWire is also a hot plug-and-play technology, which means that a device can be disconnected and then reconnected without the need to restart the computer.
FireWire is a cross-platform implementation of the high-speed serial data bus -- defined by IEEE Standard 1394 that can move large amounts of data between computers and peripheral devices.
FireWire is fast--it can transfer digital data at 200 megabits per second, with a planned increase to 400 megabits per second and beyond.

“FireWire Port Failures in Host Computers and Peripheral Devices”
It’s worth noting that the host FireWire port may be on the motherboard (as is the case for most Apple computers) or it may be on a PCI FireWire host adapter card.
FireWire allows users to connect storage devices and other peripherals to host computers, giving unparalled flexibility in data capture, storage, transportation, and backup capabilities.
The cause of FireWire port failures is extremely complex and this White Paper cannot embody all possible failure scenarios or solutions to the problems.

 Device Drivers - FireWire
FireWire is a cross-platform implementation of the high-speed serial data bus -- defined by the IEEE 1394-1995, IEEE 1394a-2000, and IEEE 1394b standards -- that can move large amounts of data between computers and peripheral devices.
FireWire ports were also integrated into many other computer products dating back to the Power Macintosh G3 "Blue and White" computers.
FireWire is integrated into Power Macs, iMacs, eMacs, PowerBooks, iBooks, and the iPod.
