 Definition of Floppy disk
Floppy disks are also, unlike hard disks, handled and seen; even a novice user can identify a floppy disk.
On Unix or Unix-like systems the dd program can be used to write an image to a floppy.
Also, in a non-network environment, floppies have been the primary means of transferring data between computers (sometimes jokingly referred to as Sneakernet or Frisbeenet).

Russification of Macintosh: Mysterious Floppy "image"
And so an icon of a floppy disk appears on the desktop and you can use this "make-believe" virtual floppy as any regular floppy disk.
You can take a floppy with something on it, have a program read it and write a snapshot of it in an "image" file, which you can send to someone via e-mail, for example.
Turns out that you really don't have to write the "image" out to a floppy to use it on your own computer once you've got the "image" from the Internet or other source.

From time to time i update the floppy image on this site as well.
if you want to try dummynet, here is a bootable floppy image of a system with FreeBSD, bridging, ipfw, dummynet, natd, ppp, drivers for a few interfaces, and accessible via telnet.
Then put the floppy into a machine with hopefully at least one interface, and wait for it to boot.

It is useful for "learn unix on a floppy" as it runs from ramdisk, includes the man-pages for everything, and behaves in a generally predictable way.

NetBSD (1.2.1 to 1.3.1) boot disks would prompt me for a timezone when sysinst started and crash, FreeBSD would dump the core (or try, read only filesystem) then go back to the openboot prompt.
