FOMA -- short for "freedom of mobile multimedia access" -- is NTT& 3G mobile phone system, and features handsets that can handle high-speed data transmission and also access scaled-down Internet pages.
We want to present various business models with FOMA to expand the use of the system among corporate users," managing director Kunio Ushioda is quoted.
Sales of handsets with FOMA functions have so far remained sluggish, reaching around 130,000 units as of early September, against a target of 1.38 million units by March 31, 2003.

NTT DoCoMo announced in December 2003 that it would adopt Linux for future 3G mobile phones, and its partners NEC and Panasonic chose MontaVista Linux to power a jointly developed Linux smart phone design meant for use with DoCoMo's 3G FOMA (Freedom of Mobile multimedia Access) network.
Japan's largest mobile phone carrier, NTT DoCoMo, has taken a $3 million equity stake in embedded Linux tools and support company MontaVista Software Inc.
The company has also looked at using Linux on the infrasture side of its FOMA network.
